$10,000 iTunes Giveaway

I'm sure many of our readers have been keeping a close eye on the Apple countdown to 25 billion App Store downloads. If you manage to download the 25 billionth iPad app, you will win yourself $10,000 worth of App Store credit. You can also enter to win without purchase or download from Apple.

According to my math: the Apple ticker is rattling off 10,000 App downloads every 24 seconds. Seeing as we getting close with only 181,000,000 more downloads being needed, we need 18,100 X 24 seconds = 434,400 more seconds to pass before the 25 billionth app download.

434,000 seconds = 7,240 minutes = 120 hours = 5 days!

Assuming a pretty constant rate of downloads, Monday at around noon Cupertino time is going to be the time to download your favorite app.

iPad running Windows 8

Microsoft decided to finally release Windows 8 for tablets on Leap Day today. Developers have had access to Windows 8 since fall last year, and is now being offered for free in beta.

I'm not really sure why anyone would want to put Windows 8 on a much more expensive iPad. It would make sense to put Windows 8 on a Kindle Fire tablet or unsupported by Android Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich. Thoughts?

Edge-to-edge iPad Concept [Video]

Aatma Studio put together this significantly advanced iPad concept video for your viewing pleasure. Some features for this iPad concept is an edge-to-edge screen, magnetic iPad with near field communications and a 3D holographic display for playing multiplayer games.

This computer generated iPad 3 concept is definitely a few years down the road, but may lead us to an awesome end-user iPad. What do you think? What will Apple deliver next Wednesday?

iPad 3 Thickness

Some people in China managed to get some digital calipers around the next Apple tablet to determine the thickness of the iPad 3. The digital calipers suggest that the iPad 3 will be around 9.50 millimeters or 0.37 inches thick as compared to the iPad 2 at 8.69 mm thick. The only problem I see with this comparison is that Apple specs the iPad 2 at 0.34-inch or 8.8 mm. Maybe these calipers are slightly out of calibration to justify the iPad 2 thickness differences.

The increase in thickness is expected for the iPad 3 assuming the thicker retina display and LTE integration may slightly increase the overall thickness. Hopefully the battery was enlarged to help fill the available space for an increase in iPad 3 battery life.

iPad 3, No Home Button

Looking at the Apple iPad 3 invite, it appears that the background image shows a buttonless retina iPad. Judging by the spacing of the dock icons, the iPad being displayed is in portrait mode with no sign of a home button along the bezel.

I have really grown to love iPad gestures and rarely use the home button. The 4 finger grip swipe has become intuitive in place of the home button. Maybe Apple will include some Siri-like iPad voice control for the next iPad.

Cydia Constantly Reloads Packages On My iPad

Ever wondered why Cydia is constantly "Reloading Data" on your iPad. Redditor indochris609 posed this question on the jailbreak reddit and received an answer from Cydia creator, Saurik.

Here is what Jay Freeman had to say about this issue:

“So, the “Reloading Data” step is something that can be made faster (and often is: new releases of Cydia often improve the performance of Reloading Data, and it is drastically improved when Apple releases new devices; on the new A5 CPU that step is almost pleasant).

However, the part where it is downloading packages from third party servers is a different story: Cydia, unlike the App Store (or almost any similar service), stores the entire package catalog locally. This is why it can (quite quickly, in fact) render an insanely long table with all packages in it that you can just fling your way through, while the App Store shows you 25 packages at a time with a slow “load more” button.

However, this means that it actually has to keep packages locally, and has to keep their records up to date. From a “cold start”, downloading the package catalog is something like three megabytes, compressed (totaled from BigBoss, ModMyi, and ZodTTD).”

The only time that your iPad won't automatically reload the catalog is for the 15 minute window following the upload of packages and updates. Now you know what is up with Cydia on your iPad thanks to saurik.

iPad 3 Apple Event Announced

Apple released invites (as Googles Eric Schmidt took the stage at MWC 2012) for the rumored iPad 3 event rumored for March 7th.

iPad 2, Black Vs White

Data published today by TheNextWeb via ShopoBot show that the White iPad runs $10 to $15 more than the black iPad models in the market. This means there is a slight prejudice on the iPad color in terms of value of the Apple device.

With the looming announcement of the iPad 3 overshadowing iPad 2 resales, many expect to see used (and new) iPad 2 prices to drop even further. Many are expecting Apple to keep the iPad 2 around and offer it at a discounted price of $200 to $350 directly from Apple. This uncertainty is causing many retailers to drop the new iPad 2 price down, driving down the used iPad 2 purchase price as well.

Are you itching to try and unload your iPad 2 to upgrade to the iPad 3?

Power Felt iPad Case

The geeks at Wake Forest University have developed a thermoelectric cloth that can turn heat into an electric charge at an economical price. Cost has been a main inhibitor of other thermoelectric cloths going mainstream, reaching $1,000 per kilogram.

Power Felt would only add $1 to an iPhone cover, or around $5 to the cost of an iPad cover to supply a charge. Wake Forest is currently in takes with investors for produce Power Felt commercially. This thermoelectric cloth would certainly require some integration into a device infracture to seamlessly supply a charge that a smartphone can utilize.

IconRotator: iPhone Cydia Tweak

Ryan Petrich (@rpetrich) released a simple new tweak today for the iPhone to bring iPad like functionality to the iPhone. IconRotator does not add a new icon or have any settings to configure in your extensions. IconRotator is not available in the standard Cydia repo's, and will require that you add Ryan's repo at http://rpetri.ch/repo/" to search and install this tweak.

Adding this source to Cydia will provide IconRotator for free to your jailbroken iPhone.

Now no matter if your iPhone is still rotated after exiting a game, you iPhone springboard and icons will be oriented to the direction your iPhone is being held. This is a simple and FREE tweak from Ryan Petrich, definitely worth the install.

There have been many Cydia alternatives which have never had much success over the past 5 years of jailbreaking the iPhone (and iPad). The iTweakStore.com has been launched with:

More On iPad 3 Display

The iPad 3 display screen according to recent iPad 3 rumors, appears to weigh around 0.6 ounces lighter than the iPad 2 display, both displays are the same dimensions. The LCD cable on the iPad 3 is slightly larger than the one for the iPad 2. This may be on purpose so people don't merely install a retina display panel on their iPad 2.

When comparing under a microscope, it was found that the dimensions were 2048 x 1536 for the iPad 3, or approximately 260 pixels per square inch. Overall, slightly less that the 300 pixels per square inch for the iPhone 4/4S retina display. Plenty for the 1920 by 1080 required for full 1080p HD, basically the quality of Bluray.

iPad Cydia Tweak: LockSliderz [Video]

A new cydia tweak called LockSliderz allows you to add dual functionality to your lock slider, along with a 2nd one, providing up to 4 different functions. As always, you can slide the knob to unlock your iPad and return to the last application you were working in before you put your iPad to sleep. Now there are options to adjust the size of the sliders, and also select a specific iPad app to launch directly from the lock screen. LockSliderz on my iPad and iPhone has been quite functional and useful overall, especially if you have a few apps that you generally launch on your iPad.

LockSliderz is available for $1.49 from the ModMyi repo in Cydia. This tweak has options controlled in your Settings app, and does not add a new icon to your iPad springboard. This is one of the more useful paid Cydia tweaks for your iPad.

iPad 3 Retina Display Panel [Video]

MJ over at iFixit has managed to get her hands on the rumored iPad 3 display, but were unable to get it powered on.

Many are still expecting that Apple will have a media event for the new iPad 3 on March 7th, with the new iPad to likely to available for preorders on March 9th. iPad 3 Launch on March 16th?

iPad 3 Launch Date: March 16th

Many have been discussing the Apple event which is rumored for March 7th for retina iPad 3, this date seems firm for the next iPad based on reliable WSJ sources. This leads many to believe that Apple will open up preorders 2 days later on Friday.

I would expect that the iPad 3 will maintain the same price structure of the iPad 2. Hopefully the iPad 2 will drop in the neighborhood of $300 for the base model. Assuming that the iPad 3 will include a retina display and speedier processor, are you planning to buy one?

What price point will make you change your mind?

Shanghai iPad Sales Resume

After some unrest over the iPad trademark in China, Proview Technology offered to negotiate with Apple over an alleged iPad trademark infringement. According to Reuters, Shanghai Pudong New Area People’s Court ruled in Apple’s favor after a hearing on Wednesday.

This is good news since Chinese authorities were seizing iPads from retailers in Chinese cities and Proview was attempting to block shipments since the iPad is manufactured in China at the iFactory. The value of the iPad trademark in China is estimated to be over $1 billion.

Flash On The iPad With OnLive

Many sites have been optimized for the iPad, but there are still a few cool things done with Flash that aren't being done with HTML5. A premium subscription for the OnLive Desktop Plus iPad app will provide seamless flash on your iPad. According to MacRumors, this $4.99 monthly subscription does not handle flash gaming as well as flash video.

OnLive Desktop provdes a method for remote access for a PC "in the cloud". It is the premium version that includes a Flash Player and PDF-enabled browser. OnLive Desktop App is available for FREE download from the app store.

Office For iOS [iPad]

It was rumored back in November that Microsoft Office would be coming to iOS with a price point of around $10 for each MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It is rumored that the Office for iOS app has been submitted to Apple for approval in the App Store.

Check out this leaked photo by The Daily of an iPad running the Microsoft Office app:

iPad Cydia Tweak: Graviboard For iOS 5 [Video]

Yesterday afternoon, Conrad Kramer updated his chaotic cydia tweak for the iPad for iOS 5 functionality. Graviboard for iOS 5 is available in a free update for previous owners of Graviboard, and will be offered for only $0.99 for new customers for a couple days. The price I paid for this Cydia tweak was the original price of $2.99. You have the capability to adjust the gravity, friction and bounciness of the icons while being subject to gravity.

Graviboard doesn't add a new icon to your springboard, but can instead be customized in the extensions section of your settings. Graviboard is "launched" with an Activator action, and the home button returns the your springboard from the craziness of Graviboard. There are options to include or not include the dock icons, turn on/off app launching and disable page swiping. Graviboard is also interactive on your iPad with finger mode creating either a gravity well, anti-gravity well, or enabling you to toss the icons around on your springboard.

Graviboard 2 is available for FREE for previous tweak supporters and the regular price is $2.99...head over to Cydia and check it out. One of the best tweaks out there!

iPad Global Price Index

Nicole Martinelli of Cult Of Mac put together a nice comparison of the relative cost for a 32GB WiFi-only iPad 2 in different locations on the map. Number crunching shows that the 32GB WiFi-only iPad runs $655 in the United States as compared to neighboring countries Mexico ($621) and Canada ($605) being slightly less. Brazil seems to be an outlier, jumping to over $1,000 for the same device.

Click here or on the image above for a larger version.

These prices are sure to drop as we get closer to an iPad 3 announcement. You would think that Foxconn moving operations to Brazil may reduce the exhorbant prices for the iPad 2 in Brazil.

Be sure to check out the ABC Nightline: iFactory presentation tonight with an insiders look of Foxconn.

Kickstarter Recommendation: iPad Dash

A couple days ago, Dash was introduced on Kickstarter as the in-car solution for your iPhone. There have already been over 180 backers stepping forward, pledging $40,000 of their $45,000 goal. It seems that accessing your iPhone's small screen from 2-3 feet from your face while driving won't work very well. I like the concept, but think that an iPad would work much better for this function.

Don't you agree that the iPad mounted in the car would much more useful?

iPad 3 Minimum Camera Requirements

Assuming that the iPad 3 will include a retina display, the external cameras would need to be 2048x1536 on the iPad 3 just to take full advantage of the retina display pixels. This would require the front and/or back facing iPad 3 cameras to include a 3.1 megapixel camera. MIC Gadget are suggesting that the camera is much improved, but think it will fall short of the iPhone 4S 8MP camera.

I have seen people take photos and videos with their iPad, and I think they look damn silly. The front facing camera on the iPad is quite useful for video chatting, but the rear camera seems unnecessary. Thoughts?

Graviboard Updated For iOS 5

The iOS 5 jailbreak has been available for about a month or so, and cydia developers are scrambling to update their cydia tweaks. Conrad Kramer (@conradev) has just updated his popular iOS cydia tweak called Graviboard. This update is available for FREE for previous supporters, and will only cost $0.99 for the next few days (I paid $2.99 for Graviboard). We will update our full video review of this iPad tweak later tonight.

Graviboard was one of our Top 5 reasons to jailbreak your iPad 2, definitely worth checking out while it is on sale. Conrad is also very quick to respond on twitter if you have any questions...

Inside Foxconn: ABC Nightline [iFactory]

Apple has allowed ABC Nightline anchor Bill Weir along with a cameraman into the their Foxconn factory buildings. Disney owns ABC, and their CEO Bob Igner is on the Apple Board. This special edition of ABC Nightline will air tomorrow (Tuesday) February 21 at 11:35 PM ET/PT on ABC.

Almost 100 Foxconn workers have been injured in a series of explosions at iPad and iPhone plants over the last few years, this inside look is definitely DVR worthy if you aren't a nightowl. Again, February 21 at 11:35 PM ET/PT on ABC.

"For years, Apple and Foxconn have been synonymous with monster profits and total secrecy so it was fascinating to wander the iphone and iPod production lines, meet the people who build them and see how they live. Our cameras were rolling when thousands of hopeful applicants rushed the Foxconn gates and I spoke with dozens of line workers and a top executive about everything from hours and pay to the controversies over suicides at the plant and the infamous “jumper nets” that line the factories in Shenzhen. After this trip, I’ll never see an Apple product the same way again,”

iPad 3 Rear Panel Update

Over the past couple days, MacRumors has managed to get some photographic evidence of the iPad 3 display and rear panel. The photo below is claimed to be an iPad 3 rear panel along with a comparison shot of the iPad, iPad 2 and upcoming iPad 3. This could certainly be a small update for the iPad 2 instead, what do you think?

Another picture from MacRumors shows the iPad 3 display under magnification next to an iPad 2. At the same magnification, 4 pixels (2×2) from the iPad 2’s display are being compared to the iPad 3 retina display. The 16 pixels (4×4) appear to cover the exact same area, making double the resolution. Double resolution equals 4 times the pixels!

Still waiting for the pictures of the 8-inch iPad everyone is talking about.
