Record: App Store Monthly Downloads

A few months back, the number of free apps downloaded on Apple’s App Store had started to decline during the summer while people enjoyed the outdoors. It appears to hit a new record high during November, with 5.65 million downloads per day thanks to the new iPhone 4S and iOS 5.

Apps in the top 200 in the App Store are also seeing record downloads, I'm sure that xmas will lead to even more downloads in December. I guess that new datacenter will be put to work by the millions of iOS users.

iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak for iPad with redsn0w 0.9.10b2

The iPhone Dev Team has delivered an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak for A4 devices including the iPad. Redsn0w 0.9.10b2 will not jailbreak the iPad 2 (or iPhone 4S), but will work for every other supported Apple device. The iPad 2 can ONLY be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.3 using JailbreakMe 3.0, with pod2g diligently working toward a new untethered jailbreak.

This update to redsn0w helps to correct the launchctl-related fix by @planetbeing as mentioned by @saurik. As usual, you can just re-run redsn0w in jailbreak mode over your existing 5.0.1 jailbreak.

Here are the step to utilize redsn0w 0.9.10b2 for your iPad or iPhone:

Step 1: Download redsn0w 0.9.10b2 for Windows (here) and Mac (here)

Step 2: After you've completed the download, run redsn0w 0.9.10b2 by double clicking the redsn0w.exe file in the RedSn0w folder.

Step 3: Click the 'jailbreak' button and install Cydia on your iPad. For iOS 5 Beta: Choose 'Select IPSW' to jailbreak iOS 5 beta firmware

Step 4: Ensure your device is off and plugged in, follow the steps to put your iPad into DFU mode in redsn0w.

Step 5: While in DFU mode, redsn0w 0.9.10b1 will begin to jailbreak your iPad. It is best to not interrupt it or use your computer during the jailbreak.

As before, firmwares above iOS 4.3.3 you will need to use the "just boot" button to jailbreak your iPad each time it loses power. But at least your iPad is still jailbroken.

Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak Tutorial For iPad [Video]

Here is a quick tutorial with the details for jailbreaking your iPad in iOS 5.0.1. This is an untethered jailbreak via redsn0w 0.9.10b1 from the iPhone Dev team. I sped the video up a little bit to keep in around 5 minutes. The hardest part is probably getting your iPad into DFU mode, which is pretty easy after you get the hang of it.

This tutorial isn't very complicated, drop a comment if I missed anything. Now you are ready to enjoy Cydia on your iPad with your untethered jailbreak, be sure to install Springtomizer 2 on your iPad along with Activator and SBSettings.

Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether for iPad Jailbreak

If your iPad already has an iOS 5.0.1 tethered jailbreak, you can simply download and install Corona 5.0.1 untether through Cydia on your iPad. This is a much simpler way to get your iPad to an untethered jailbreak, but you can always download redsn0w 0.9.10b1 to get your iPad an untethered jailbreak in iOS 5.0.1.

Personally, I used the Corona 5.0.1 on both my iPad and iPhone 4 to get it untethered. Are you to an untethered jailbreak yet?

Heat Sensitive iPhone Gif

The guys at Siri Humor posted a video on their YouTube channel of the heat sensitive iPhone backing in action. I have ordered my heat-sensitive iPhone, how about you?

Now RF Laserworks needs to deliver this for the iPad!

Heat-sensitive iPhone

I have already ordered myself a heat sensitive iPhone backing material since it appears to be pretty cool. I remember while giving birth to our 3rd child, my wife had a heat sensitive sticker on her forehead to display her surface temperature. I'm not sure how long the heat sensitive backing will remain, er, sensitive. But it does definitely look cool!

It is available for $12 from RF Laserworks with or without an Apple logo cutout. We need to get one of these for the iPad as well, it would probably work better if it were flatter!

Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 5

Again today, pod2g has updated us on the status of the jailbreak for iOS 5. He has handed over his iOS 5 untethered jailbreak for A4 devices (iPad 2 and iPhone 4S excluded) to the Chronic Dev Team. The past week, pod2g has confirmed the functionality of his iOS 5 untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3Gs, and iPad.

As the iOS 5 jailbreak is being prepared, pod2g is continuing to focus his efforts on the A5 powered devices, the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. From pod2g's blog:

I gave all the details to the chronic dev team so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP.

I'll put all my energy from now on on the A5

Me personally, have an iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, iPad and iPad 2. All but my iPhone 4S is running in a jailbroken state with Cydia on my iPad, iPad 2, and iPhone 4. Some are tethered, some untethered, and I'm probably most excited about a jailbreak for my iPhone 4S.

How about you?

iPad 2 Home Button Calibration

If you have noticed that your iPad (or iPhone) home button isn't as responsive as it once was, you may need to recalibrate it. You've probably pressed your iPad 2 home button 50 times each day since you bought it, so after 10,000 or so presses it may need a recalibration. I use gestures on my jailbroken iPad 2 (iOS 4.3.3) and prpbably press my home button much less on my iPad as compared to my iPhone 4S. Check out this video from Jeff at Jailbreak Movies on YouTube.

Here are the steps to recalibrate your iPad 2 home button:

1. Open any application (stocks app recommended)
2. Press/hold the power button until the "slide to shutdown" bar appears.
3. Release Power button
4. Press and hold Home button lightly until screen returns to icon screen
5. Enjoy your functioning home button!

Steve Jobs Statue

On October 5, 2011, Steve Jobs died in his Palo Alto home, aged 56. His death certificate listed respiratory arrest as the immediate cause of death, with "metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor" as the underlying cause. This was one day after the announcement of the iPhone 4S which was initially disappointing. GRAPHISOFT erected this bronze statue of Steve Jobs shown below in Budapest.

Gabor Bojar hired Hungarian sculptor Erno Toth to create a statue of Steve Jobs:

The relationship between GRAPHISOFT and Apple can be traced to the 1980’s, when Jobs came across the first version of GRAPHISOFT’s ArchiCAD software at the 1984 CeBIT in Germany. His first impressions of the software led him to throw Apple’s support behind the development and distribution of ArchiCAD.

iOS untethered jailbreak by pod2g

pod2g has updated his website with a quick iOS 5 untethered jailbreak video.

From pod2g:

Above is a new video demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4.

This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods.

The jailbreak is near ready for prime time (excluding 4S and iPad 2).

Patches are the same as redsn0w's. Expect the same level of stability.

Some more days to wait. Be patient, we're doing our best.

Springtomizer 2 On The iPad [Video]

Springtomize 2 is now available to download in the Cydia App store for your iPad running iOS 5 jailbroken. With this tweak you can customize your iPad’s animations, dock, Lockscreen, icons, folders and much, much more. It really is quite amazing how much Springtomize’s developer (Filippo Biga) has managed to pack into one single jailbreak tweak. Check out this video walkthrough of Springtomize 2 for iOS 5+ on the iPad (1st Generation)

Since I (and many of you readers) have already installed Springtomize for iOS 4, the initial cost during the first week or two will be $0.99. The price is $2.99 for new users of Springtomize, the price is expected to increase to $5 ($2.99 for upgraders) after the first couple weeks trial period.

Definitely the best tweak available out there for the iPad!

Pulse For iPad

One of my favorite iPad apps just received a UI update similar to the Netflix improvements, including a smart dock. This version definitely keeps the functionality I've grown to love of Pulse along with the smooth stylish interface of Flipboard.

What's new:
  • Completely Redesigned Catalog: New cover flow interaction to browse through sources and discover your favorite content
  • Introducing Smart Dock: Based on what you read, Pulse recommends you sources you may enjoy
  • Simpler, Cleaner Interface: Pulse takes a back seat, and lets the content shine and take the center stage.
Pulse is available for FREE from the App Store.

iPad 2 For pod2g

As many of you know, pod2g is working diligently on an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 and is currently working to jailbreak the iPhone 4S. Older devices such as the iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch have already been confirmed for an untethered jailbreak. The only remaining device without a jailbreak (for iOS 5) is the iPad 2, and we would like to help get one into his hands.

We will contribute the first $100 toward his new iPad 2 and need your help to get one in his hands before the holidays. We are all looking for the same end goal here, for an untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2 running iOS 5. You can donate a couple bucks specifically for an iPad 2 here or stop by pod2g's iOS blog and help him out!

Jailbreak iPad with redsn0w 0.9.9b9b

Redsn0w 0.9.9b9 will not jailbreak the iPad 2 (or iPhone 4S), but will work for every other supported Apple device. The iPad 2 can ONLY be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.3 using JailbreakMe 3.0, with pod2g diligently working toward a new untethered jailbreak.

Here are the step to utilize redsn0w 0.9.9b9b for your iPad or iPhone:

Step 1: Download redsn0w 0.9.9b9b for Windows (here) and Mac (here)

Step 2: After you've completed the download, run redsn0w 0.9.9b1 by double clicking the redsn0w.exe file in the RedSn0w folder.

Step 5: While in DFU mode, redsn0w 0.9.9b1 will begin to jailbreak your iPad. It is best to not interrupt it or use your computer during the jailbreak.

As before, firmwares above iOS 4.3.3 you will need to use the "just boot" button to jailbreak your iPad each time it loses power. But at least your iPad is still jailbroken.

iPhone 4S Jailbreak Testing

Currently it looks like pod2g is very close to an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Currently he is working through issues with the A5 powered iPhone 4S and iPad 2, an update on his progress is expected tomorrow. As for now, redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b9b to offer full support for those in the jailbreak community stuck in iOS 5.0.1.

Here is the latest on redsn0w from the iPhone Dev Team blog:

The holiday season is almost here (Happy Holidays!) so we realize everyone is busy (especially @pod2g!). And even though we always recommend that jailbreakers stay where they are until a new untethered JB comes out, that’s not always possible. So we’ve updated redsn0w for those who may have found themselves at iOS 5.0.1, and added some other useful features too:
  • native support for 5.0.1 (no need to point redsn0w at 5.0 IPSW or use command-line args). Support automatically extends to all of redsn0w’s various functions: “Jailbreak”, “Just boot”, “Fetch blobs”, “Stitch blobs”, “Recovery Fix”
  • iBooks fixed in 5.0 and 5.0.1. This is a targeted fix that doesn’t remove entire sandbox mechanism. 5.x users already using redsn0w “Just Boot” can just use the new version without redoing entire jailbreak again
  • 3GS old-bootrom owners can now create custom IPSWs without blobs
  • ultrasn0w compatability update (i.e. same baseband requirements) for 5.0.1 will be available on Cydia Monday
  • support for newer 8GB iPhone4 (which until now had problems with “Fetch blobs”). Thanks to @JKjeepnJeff for loaning us one of these newer i4 units for testing!
  • allows Windows users (not just OS X users) to use the “Custom” button to create IPSWs without baseband updates
  • accommodates APTickets in 5.x (until next Apple countermove). APTickets are crypto-verified before submitting to Cydia, just like the main blobs. Cydia server support for sending back the APTickets is upcoming. For now, use stitched IPSWs for 5.x. Due to APTickets, stitched 5.x IPSWs now require user to start in “Pwned DFU” mode
  • Support added for stitching 4.x blobs to iPad2-GSM IPSWs. Similar to @notcom’s TinyCFW but doesn’t require lots of RAM or a TSS-assisted restore. Won’t work for iPad2 5.x blobs (or iPhone4S at all) until a bootrom-level exploit is out
  • top line now shows whether (and where) a redsn0w update is available, or if the version being run is the latest. Uses DNS TXT record to alleviate any concerns about snooping
  • no 5.1 beta support at this time (major apps like Cydia are not yet compatible)
  • @pod2g has been doing a great job porting his 5.x untether…check his blog for updates!
  • Owners of newer 3GS iPhones must not flash the iPad baseband. The iPad baseband will not work on 3GS iPhones built later than 2011 week 35.
This is still a tethered jailbreak for all except old-bootrom 3GS users.

Kindle Fire Sales Keeping Pace With iPad 2

According to an announcement by Amazon, they have been selling 1 million Kindle Fire tablets each week for the past 3 weeks.

Amazon.com today announced that Kindle devices remain the hottest products this holiday season – for the third week in a row, customers are purchasing well over 1 million Kindle devices per week, and Kindle Fire remains the #1 bestselling, most gifted, and most wished for product across the millions of items available on Amazon.com since its introduction 11 weeks ago.

Assuming they could maintain this pace for an entire quarter, Amazon would be selling 13 million Kindle Fire tablets each quarter. Currently, the Apple iPad 2 is estimated to sell 13 million or so tablets in this quarter. Maybe this will lead to a price drop from Apple for the iPad, the Kindle Fire is only winning on price point right now.

iPad 2, iPhone 4S Jailbreak Research

Early today, pod2g has again updated us on his progress and it seems that he is nearly done testing the older devices. He has fixed some stability issues and has to consolidate a package for the jailbreak community, but isn't allowing beta testing due to paranoid fearing leaks. A couple jailbreak developers have headed off to the other team (internship at Apple), like comex.

There was a postive note: "In the meanwhile, I'm starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S". Still no word on an iPad 3 jailbreak for the jailbreak community. :)

Check out pod2g's blog at: http://pod2g-ios.blogspot.com/

Grand Theft Auto III iPad App

Welcome to Liberty City. Where it all began. Rockstar Games celebrates the 10th anniversary of one of the most influential games of all time. The critically acclaimed blockbuster Grand Theft Auto III comes to mobile devices, bringing to life the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City. With a massive and diverse open world, a wild cast of characters from every walk of life and the freedom to explore at will, Grand Theft Auto III puts the dark, intriguing and ruthless world of crime at your fingertips.

One of my favorite PS2 games in college was Grand Theft Auto III, a huge improvement to any other first person game with free roaming throughout the city. The follow ups in Vice City, San Andreas and others were definitely a good play. This game is one of the all-time best sellers for Rockstar games, and the iPad version is made worthy of the 10-year old classic.

Grand Theft Auto III is available for $4.99 from the App Store

Netflix iPad App Update

Back when the Amazon Kindle Fire was released, many were impressed with the updated interface for the Netflix App. A side-by-side comparison of the Kindle Fire and the iPad 2 showed that the Netflix app was the only thing found to be more snappy on the smaller Kindle Fire. It seems that many iPad 2 owners are Netflix power users and I'm surprised that it took so long to get this update for the iPad 2.

Netflix has been take a hit publicly with the recent price increases, and loss of subscribers. Here is a little more from the Netflix blog:

Starting today, Netflix members in Latin America can enjoy unlimited TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix on their Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, or on their HD TV with Apple TV.

Also, Netflix “Just for Kids” is now available on Apple TV, providing a section that offers a broad selection of TV shows and movies for children 12 and under. You can read more about “Just for Kids” in Todd Yellin’s original blog post when we first introduced the section in August.

iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPad

The past few days updates have been blowing up on Pod2g's iOS blog as he announced today that the 2nd generation Apple TV also has an untethered jailbreak available in 4.4.3. He also posted that the jailbreak exploit is functional on the iPod 3G, iPad 1, iPhone 3Gs, iPod 4G, and now the Apple TV 2. This still leave me with an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 that is unsupported for a jailbreak in iOS 5, but beggars can't be choosers I guess.

Who knows, this jailbreak exploit may boost holiday sales of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and refurbished 1st generation iPad. Maybe the iPad 3 jailbreak exploit isn't too far away!

iPad 3 Jailbreak

It isn't too early to begin thinking about a jailbreak for the iPad 3, but the A6 processor in the iPad 3 may introduce even more issues for the jailbreak community. Currently, we have a jailbreak for the iPad running the A4 but are still waiting for a jailbreak for the iPad 2 running the A5. The iPhone 4S also uses the A5 processor and doesn't have a jailbreak in iOS 5 as of yet.

The iPad 3 is also expected to have a 'retina display' likely at double the resolution (2048x1536) of the current iPad. The iPhone 4 doubled the resolution of the iPhone 3Gs, making it much more simple for app developers to design/update for compatibility. The iPad 3 may open the iPad line up for multiple models, much like the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S.

Kinectimals for iPad

Microsoft has dabbed a little bit in the iOS market, they are even rumored to be bringing Office to the iPad. Today, they have released Kinectimals for the iPad (2) and iPhone (4/4S) to give people the experience of Kinectimals on Kinect for XBox 360. Kinectimals invites users to “use your phone to visit the island of Lemuria and play with, care for and fall in love with your very own cub”.

This app is 178MB, and is priced relatively reasonable as compared to the Kinect version which is still over $20 on Amazon

Kinectimals is a universal iOS app (iPad and iPhone) and is available for $3 from the App Store.

Apple To Acquire Anobit

Apple is set to buy a flash storage company for $400-500 million, reports Calcalist (Hebrew) Anobit, based in Israel, currently has nearly 100 patents and already makes products for the Apple iPad, iPhone and MacBook Air. Apple has plenty of cash on hand, but hasn't spent this kind of money on a hardware company since buying Steve Jobs' NeXT.

Apple is interested in acquiring this ability to increase the amount of memory on any device and to improve the reliability of memory. For example, the chip will allow a combination of flash memory drive double volume iPad devices cost the same or new MacBook models.

Apple's plans for the future of Anobit, currently employs about 200 workers Herzliya, not yet known.. Estimates are that Apple will continue to employ workers in Israel, and may have even set up a local development center that would increase the number of workers.

iOS 5.1 Beta 2 Released

If you have a developer account, you can now download iOS 5.1 Beta 2 for your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Many are hoping that Apple has finally licked the battery issues associated with the iOS 5 update, I guess only time will tell. Earlier today, pod2g stated that an iOS 5.0.1 update was safe for the jailbreak community. I wonder if iOS 5.1 has closed any of the exploit holes being utilized for the jailbreak tool.

Maybe Apple has introduced a new vulnerability in iOS 5.1, we definitely won't hear about it until Apple exists beta and makes it available to the public.
