iPad Halloween Costume

NASA engineer Mark Rober used some red sauce and two iPad 2s in order to pretend, at whatever Halloween convention he might be attending, that he has a vast, open, and bloody wound through the core of his torso.

Relatively simple Halloween costume using 2 iPad 2s to make it look like you have a huge hole in your torso. You'll also need a MiFi hotspot (if you don't have a WiFi network available where you want to use the costume). Basically you start a FaceTime chat between the iPads and then tape one to your front and one to your back. Add a little red paint and you're good to go. It's supposed to look like you have a gaping hole in your torso. If you spend more time than I did on the blood and the flesh part and lining up the iPads it could look pretty cool.

Slide to Unlock Patent

Yesterday, the US Patent and Trademark Office issued a patent to Apple for their "Slide to Unlock" gesture. Many remember Steve Jobs in January 2007 proclaiming “To unlock the phone, I just take my finger and slide it across. Wanna see that again? We wanted something you couldn’t do by accident in your pocket. Just slide it across – BOOM.”

iOS executive Scott Forstall was credited as an inventor along with a half dozen Apple engineers. This patent was filed back at the end of 2005, making anyone using the "slide to unlock" feature infringing on Apple's patent.

Apple Online Order For Store Pickup

When I ordered the 1st generation iPad, I had a heck of a time getting it from FedEx. They attempted to deliver it once, then tried again the next day before I was given the opportunity to pick it up at their location across town. Apple has began to roll out a plan to allow people to pick-up their online purchases at their local Apple store.

This program includes online orders at Apple and will require proof of purchase and some identification. This is a good idea for holiday gifts that you would like to keep secret from the children or spouse. Apple stores will also accept returns of online orders to avoid return shipping issues.

iPhone Camera Comparison

Lisa Bettany posted iPhone camera images to her Camera+ blog last week. She compares close up photos with the different versions of the iPhone; the original, 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S. She also included some images from a couple different Canon cameras.

We quickly forget how bad the past cameras were for the iPhone. The original iPhone and iPhone 3G feature a built-in Fixed focus 2.0 megapixel camera located on the back for still digital photos. It has no optical zoom, flash or autofocus, and does not support video recording. The iPhone 3GS has a 3.2 megapixel camera, manufactured by OmniVision, featuring autofocus, auto white balance, and auto macro (up to 10 cm). It is also capable of capturing 640x480 (VGA resolution) video at 30 frames per second.

The iPhone 4 introduced a 5.0 megapixel camera, also located on the back, which is equipped with a backside illuminated sensor capable of capturing pictures in low-light conditions, as well as an LED flash capable of staying lit for video recording at 720p resolution. The camera on the iPhone 4S is capable of shooting 8MP stills and record 1080p videos. The camera can now be accessed directly from the lock screen, and the volume up button as a shutter trigger. The built-in gyroscope is able to stabilize the camera while recording video.

AppLocker For iPad [Cydia Tweak]

iDownloadBlog reviewed a pretty useful tweak for the iPad (or iPhone) called AppLocker. My kids like to push the limits and open 'Rage HD' or my Adult Swim app that are unacceptable for them to use. Many emails have been drafts from coloring book apps to show off their work, only 1 has been sent to an unintended recipent. Locking down individual apps (or having user custom settings) is a big option not available in iOS 5.

AppLocker helps to remedy this buy allowing you to set a passcode for all or some of your iOS applications. Locking down my Email, Twitter, Facebook and other applications is a very useful Cydia tweak.

AppLocker is available for $0.99 from Cydia and is also password protected from apps in the multitasking bar (app switcher)

Siri Co-Founder Leaves Apple

Dag Kittlaus, co-founder and CEO of the company that created Siri, left Apple according to AllThingsD. Several reasons for the departure have been discussed as this departure has been planned for quite some time. Dag's family is in Chicago, and time off along with brainstorming are reasons for his decision.

Apple purchased Siri back in April 2010 following the launch of the original iPad. If you couldn't tell, the above image from Siri Humor was photoshopped, but is still funny!

Siri iPad Screenshots

A developer has successfully ported Siri on the iPad and iPhone 4.  JackoPlane has shared the news and has also provided screenshot/video proof in porting Siri on iPad and iPhone 4.

I'm not really sure why other iOS 5 devices are being left behind for this Siri Personal Assistant feature, but many would like a port of Siri to the iPad. Maybe the iPhone 4S has some additional or improved hardware installed to enable this functionality? I know that once my iPad and iPhone 4 are converted over to an jailbroken version of iOS 5, I will be searching Cydia on my iPad for a way to try out Siri.

I don't know if Siri will ever make it to Cydia, due to it being software piracy technically. Cydia developers are already looking for ways to port Apple’s Siri technology to the iPad. iH8sn0w and Gojohnnyboi have somewhat ported a functioning version of Siri to a jailbroken iPad.

iPad 2 Passcode Hack In iOS 5 [Vulnerability]

According to 9to5 Mac, people can break through the passcode lock on your iPad 2 with only a SmartCover in iOS 5. I have confirmed this security flaw with my personal iPad 2 and SmartCover (that I don't use anymore) running iOS 5.

This bug easily exposes your iPad 2 to undesired access, here are the steps a perpetrator would have to go through:

• Have a lock passcode enabled iPad 2
• Hold down power button until it reaches the shutoff slider screen
• Close Smart Cover
• Open Smart Cover
• Then just click cancel

To prevent this access temporarily, you can disable the SmartCover unlocking ability in the iPad 2 settings menu under the General tab. Apple will likely fix this flaw in iOS 5.1, it may not be fixed for the release of iTunes Match though.

Siri Opinion On Jailbreaking

I'm sure that Siri (and Apple) aren't big fans of the iPad Cydia app store. It does seem like a fiesty answer from our good friend, Siri. Siri has been asked about jailbreaking by many on YouTube and on other sites, but the "No Comment" is the best response I've seen...until now!

Via Siri Humor.

Either someone has hacked Siri, or someone is having some photoshop fun with us jailbreakers using Cydia. The stock Siri answers are kind of getting old, bring on the photoshopped Siri Humor in my opinion!

WinterBoard Updated For iOS 5 iPad

If you are like me, you jailbreak your iPad for multiple reasons. One of my reasons is to unlock Apple's "walled garden" to allow complete customization access in terms of themes. Cydia contains many great tweaks to make your iPad operate with more user custom settings, and Winterboard was developed by Cydia creator Jay Freeman himself.

Winterboard has been in beta testing for a couple weeks now, and is now fully compatible and stable in running along side iOS 5. Winterboard has given many jailbreakers fits in the past, but this time it make actually be the custom theme in need of tweaking.

Give it a try, hopefully we will be able to jailbreak iOS 5 on our iPad in a couple more days (weeks?). Jailbreakers may be laying low until the expected iOS 5.1 release with iTunes Match support is launched.

iOS 5 Jailbreak Tweak List

Many of you are either sitting there with the new iPhone 4S running unjailbroken iOS 5, or have the iPad 2 jailbroken running iOS 4.3.3 (patiently waiting for a iOS 5 jailbreak). We have decided to wet your appetite and get you excited for an iOS 5 jailbreak for the A5 processor.

Below is a short list of Cydia tweaks that are functional and/or updated for iOS 5. Cydia developers are usually pretty quick to update their tweaks in the Cydia store through the iOS beta access. For the full list of Cydia tweaks for your iPad, Check out this Google Document with all the details.

Apple sells over 10 million iPads in Quarter

It seemed that many were disappointed with the Apple earning call yesterday, some were even calling for 20 million iPads even in this downed world economy. Many rivals are having difficulty even getting their tablets off the shelf and are resorting to clearance pricing to sell them.

The Apple iPad has done quite well for a relatively new product, I use my iPad everyday and twice on Sunday. Sales may have backed off a little bit, but many will be wanting a tablet this Christmas (if our budgets can muster it).

Jamming Out To iTar On Your iPad [KickStarter]

If you are looking to rock out with your iPad, Kickstarter has the guitar for you. The have already raised over $6,000 of their $50,000 goal, seems like a very nice high-end accessory for your iPad.

For a mere 200 bucks you'll get a first-run edition of the iTar. Imagine, your very own MIDI controller/ fingerboard that transforms your iPad into a truly amazing instrument. Yes, we will also love you forever and send you the above gifts as well.

I think this calls for a jam session!

iOS 5 Adoption Rate

My family has an iPad 16GB WiFi, iPad 2 64GB 3G, two iPhone 4's and my new iPhone 4S. Only 2 of these are currently running iOS 5, my wife's iPhone 4 and my iPhone 4S (obviously). So we are 40% converted, mainly because my iPad 2 the other iPhone 4 is jailbroken and my little kids use the iPad and don't urgently need the iOS 5 features.

There were some early server issues on Apple's end with the launch of iOS 5 last Wednesday, but I bet that didn't deter too many from updating. According to Loyalytics,iOS 5 is already running on over 30% of all iOS devices being supported and has been available for only 6 days.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 4 have the highest adoption rates, but surprisingly, many of the older models have also updated to iOS 5. There are certainly a few jailbreakers that are either waiting for an untethered version of an iOS 5 jailbreak or iPad 2 owners waiting for any jailbreak of iOS 5 (along with iPhone 4S).

Hopefully an iOS 5 jailbreak, along with Siri on the iPad 2 will be coming soon as well!

Refurbished iPad Price Cut

Apple has dropped the price of refurbished iPad's down $200, for a limited time. We have seen refurbished iPads with low prices before, but they seem to fly out of Apple's warehouse when offered. Here are the prices:

Refurbished 64GB iPad WiFi - $399
Refurbished 32GB iPad WiFi+3G - $399
Refurbished 64GB iPad WiFi+3G - $499

These can also be jailbroken on iOS 5, you're really only missing an A5 processor and a cameras. But you do get (at no extra charge) a few extra ounces and millimeters in thickness!

Are You Afraid Of Falling Siri?

The guys at ElectronicsBreak (SquareTrade) went and dropped their new iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II repeatedly to prove a point I guess. We won't ruin it for you, spoilers after the video.

Samsung vs Apple, a lawsuit waiting to happen...I guess not waiting!

The Apple iPhone 4 didn't fare very well in drop tests due to the exterior being almost entirely glass. The new iPhone 4S fared about the same, but it was kind of surprising how well the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone held up.

How to use AirPlay Mirroring On The iPad 2

Have you had a chance to try out AirPlay mirroring on your iPad 2?

AirPlay mirroring didn't make the top 10 iOS 5 features from this past June WWDC, but is definitely one of my favorite (and most useful) enhancements for iOS 5. I find myself constantly using AirPlay mirroring from my iPhone 4S to my iPad 2. Or my iPad 2 to my Apple TV. Here's how to do it.

Make sure your iPad, iPhone and/or Apple TV are all connected to the same WiFi. Then from your iPad 2 homescreen, double tap to bring up the task switcher. If you haven't noticed, you can swipe left past the media controls to the AirPlay controls. Touch the AirPlay icon to enable AirPlay mirroring in iOS 5, and select the device you want to share.

Apple AirPlay has become compatible with nearly every App on your iPad, Hulu is about the only exception that I've found. You can even use AirPlay mirroring for Facetime or your photos, just rotate your device to landscape mode for your HD TV.

First iPhone 4S To Outer Space

The guys at Final Cut King had a busy weekend. They sent two iPhone 4S smartphones to nearly 100,000 feet with a helium balloon.

The hard part would be waiting for them to come back down.

We launched 2 iPhone 4S phones with a weather balloon to go up to 100,000. We put one of the iPhone 4S's on an interval photo timer app and the other on video mode. We used s Spot GPS tracker (though I would not recommend it because it only tracks in 15 minutes increments.

iPad 2 Speed Compared To iPhone 4S (A5)

Both the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 have the new A5 processor, worthy competitors? Do you think the A6 processor will land in the iPad 3?

Siri Ported To The iPad

There have been many rumblings the in the last 24 hours of Siri working on the iPhone 4, with some issues. Apple limited Siri to the iPhone 4S, and porting of Siri on the iPhone 4 or iPad 2 would be piracy. Many jailbreakers have spoken up AGAINST piracy.

That didn't keep Sonny Dickson from trying to port Siri onto his iPad. He tweeted a photo earlier today of Siri ported on his iPad. Below is the photo included showing the settings, general and Siri in the iPad settings.

Apple will likely release Siri for the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 after it exits beta later this fall. With the launch of Siri (and the iPhone 4S) on Friday, many have spoken of connection issues with Siri. This is probably due to people trying to get Siri to say funny things, but it is useful too!
