Dual iPad Apps At Same Time

After some discussion of Windows 8 enabling the ability to run multiple apps on the same screen side-by-side, Aaron Ash decided to implement it on his iPad according to his blog post. As show below, he was running two games of Angry Birds (different versions) at the same time...at least you won't have to wait until all the chaos is complete to line up your next shot.

According to his blog:

There are a few bugs, such as audio not working, and accelerometer events not getting sent to applications; it may take a while to sort these out. The bottom right button turns on “edit mode” which allows you to rearrange applications, and rotate them (Angry Birds normally runs in landscape, here they’re turned).

Aaron managed to get a 3rd app running on the same screen for a little while, but crashed it after adding a fourth. I guess we need the A6 chip in the iPad and improved graphics capabilities for iOS 5 to implement this improvement.

Would you run multiple apps at the same time? How many...

App Store Clears 100,000 Apps For iPad

Less that 3 months ago, the Apple App Store cleared 75,000 iPad Apps. Now in less than 90 days, the App Store has added 25,000 more iPad specific apps to the App Store to reach 100k iPad Apps. A little over 6 months ago, the App Store reached 50k iPad Apps.

It has been just over 450 days since the iPad was launched back in March of 2010. Many apps are universal for the iPhone 4 and iPad, the ones that are iPad only (and iPhone only) force you to buy it multiple times. That is probably one of my biggest pet peeves...

iPad Sales Figures Increased, Needham & Company

Charlie Wolf of Needham & Company analyst increased his estimates for iPad shipments in Apples' third fiscal quarter and for the whole year. Wolf suggested that increased demand will and raised 3Q2011 shipments from 7.5 million to 9 million iPads, along with 2011 estimates to 30 million iPad 2 tablets.

Wolf stated:

“While competitors have rushed to launch competing tablets, they have made an imperceptible dent in the trajectory of iPad sales,” “They have been unable to undercut the price of the iPad; and they’re fallen woefully short in matching its features, ease-of-use and the number of applications written for the device. Indeed, the only risk in our forecast is on the supply side, not the demand side.”

Mac shipment projections were also raised from 3.75 million to 4.25 million for 3Q2011 and 17 million units for this entire year. 4Q2011 iPhone estimates were reduced from 17.5 million units to 16 million due to the expected iPhone 4 shipments being reduced before the iPhone 5′s launch in September. Total iPhone shipments are expected to be around 66 million units.

JailbreakMe Update, iPad 2 Jailbreak

There has been another update to the JailbreakMe.com site since previously hinting that the iOS exploit may be PDF based. This is obviously pointing toward a PDF-based exploit for either iOS in general or a specific iOS device such as the iPad 2.

According to iPhone Dev-Team team member iH8sn0w, the “git comments” point towards a comex GitHub webpage to show how long he has been working on this new exploit. It appears that this has been going on for 10 months now, with lots of hard work leading to another incredibly simple jailbreak for the iPhone and iPad.

Swiffy For iPad, iPhone

Google has created an interesting tool called Swiffy which can convery the FLV Flash files to HTML5 formats, which are indeed compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and of course the iPad. HTML5 formatting takes advantage of CSS3, JavaScript, H.264 video which are currently supported on the iPad. Flash is more than just video...apparently Swiffy works well with animations and advertisements.

Wallaby was created by Adobe as a Flash-to-HTML5 conversion tool similar to Google's Swiffy. Adobe’s Wallaby conversion relies on SVG and CSS3 for interpretation, Adobe originally stated that the tool was focused mainly on simple banner ads and animations. Google’s plan for Swiffy appears to be much larger...

So I guess us iPad owners can look forward to seeing more annoying animations and advertisements....

App Store Refund Policy

It appears that in Taiwan, Apple has started offering a 7-day refund policy on App Store Apps. Taiwanese goverment has a law requiring that retailers offer a one week return, refund policy for all purchases. Until now, Apple has never allowed any trial period for a paid app...but some refunds have been issued on a case-by-case basis for really expensive iPad apps.

A report from The Economic Times of India has confirmed that Apple has complied with the Taiwanese government, while Google has been fined over $30,000 thus far. Have you ever bought an App for your iPhone or iPad while drunk or stoned where you've had buyer remorse...nah me neither.

Netflix Streaming Options

Many internet providers have begun to implement data caps much like Verizon and AT&T for the "stream hogs" on the block. Streaming video eats up a lot of data, and now Netflix has implemented a change to relieve those precious megabytes. NetFlix has quietly implemented a change to turn down the quality of the streaming videos to reduce bandwidth.

Netflix streaming users in the United States now have the option from three different quality settings. You just need to head to the website, click on “Your Account,” and check out the Manage Video Quality link.

“Good quality” uses approximately 0.3 GB per hour, “Better quality uses around 0.7 GB per hour, and “Best quality” will use up to 1 GB/hr for standard definition an 2.3 GB/hr for HD. These new video quality options are probably geared towards Cable or DSL bandwidth limits, but mobile device users can also get a lot of use out of Netflix’s new lower bandwidth streaming options. Lower quality video won't look as good, but will certainly open up the smartphone and iPad market on 3G and 4G LTE networks.

iOS Jailbreak Convention, My Great Fest

iOS jailbreakers unite this year in London for the first global iCommunity/jailbreak convention this September. This event is called My Great Fest and have stressed that jailbreaking is different than piracy.

Here is their mission statement:

"Our mission is to become the largest jailbreak/(i)community convention for coders, themers, hackers, developers or any other mobile device user. To leave others with the better understanding of what jailbreaking actually means to us, and that it does not stand for piracy,"

Craig Fox is the creator of this initial event set for September 17th at a brewery in London. @p0sixninja, @pod2g, and @limneos are top jailbreakers that will make presentations at MGF, a convention which Fox hopes to grow in the next five years. Adult tickets start at 27 pounds (about $43 USD) for adults. Hopefully the timing will allow for the final launch of the iPhone 5 and new iOS, providing some initial insight into an iOS 5 jailbreak exploit.

If you can’t make it to London this year, you can help out MyGreatFest and purchase branded bracelets or iPhone case from the MGF-Store. MGF rubber bracelet owners will also be entered in an iPad 2 giveaway.

iOS 5 Jailbreak Downgrade

Apple has been moving toward locking down their devices for quite some time, much like iOS 4 became troubling for the iPhone 3GS. According to the Dev Team, iOS 5 betas remove the ability to save SHSH blobs preventing users to downgrade to an older version of iOS through iTunes. The essentially means that you'll be stuck to iOS 4.X to keep your device jailbroken. The next iPhone(s) will come with iOS 5 this fall and will likely be powerless in moving backwards to a previous jailbroken iOS.

APTicket is also changing:

Starting with the iOS5 beta, the role of the “APTicket” is changing — it’s being used much like the “BBTicket” has always been used. The LLB and iBoot stages of the boot sequence are being refined to depend on the authenticity of the APTicket, which is uniquely generated at each and every restore (in other words, it doesn’t depend merely on your ECID and firmware version…it changes every time you restore, based partly on a random number). This APTicket authentication will happen at every boot, not just at restore time. Because only Apple has the crypto keys to properly sign the per-restore APTicket, replayed APTickets are useless.

Jailbreaking through untethered methods will be hindered as iOS 5 updates outside of a restore time, limera1n is the only exception which runs APTicket through the boot sequence. Jailbreaking iOS 5 is going to require a new exploit from the Dev Team for future iDevices jailbreaking and older versions of iTunes.

Versions previous to iOS 5 have been unaffected jailbreaks, hopefully we'll see an iPad 2 Jailbreak before iOS 5 is launched!

Prepaid iPhone 4S

According to analyst Chris Whitmore from Deutsche Bank, Apple will be releasing a couple new iPhones this September. As many have expected, Apple will release the iPhone 5. But the news comes from the prediction that an iPhone 4S will arrive as a "mid-range" prepaid smartphone priced at around $350. Data plans will work similarly to the iPad with tiered, paying as you go where users could sign up and pay for what they need as they need it.

Chris Whitmore: "With Nokia and RIMM struggling, the time is right for Apple to aggressively penetrate the mid-range smart-phone market". The launch of an iPhone 4S from Apple seems like a very intelligent business move, much like the addition of a premium retina iPad this fall.

iPad 2 HD In Fall

The iPad 2 is still selling like hotcakes, but many are still interesting in paying a few extra bucks for a retina display on the iPad. Apple, being a premium brand, will likely bring an HD iPad display to customers before the competition. The new iPad rumored for a September announcement (along with the new iPhone) by be an iPad 2 with an high resolution display.

I would suspect that this would only raise the cost of the iPad 2 a couple hundred bucks if no other costly improvements are made to the iPad. The display may require a little more horsepower, but in my opinion, I think a $800 opening price for an HD iPad would be successful. Would you buy one or rather wait for a Prepaid iPhone 4S instead of jailbreaking your next Apple product?

iKeyboard Overlay for iPad

Some at Kickstarter decided to bring touch typing to the iPad with iKeyboard, designed by Cliff Thier. This Kickstarter project reached its funding goal rather quickly, and now has $23,000 pledged of the $4,000 goal. iKeyboard has been backed by nearly 600 people.

iKeyboard will be designed to rest on top of the iPad’s displayed touch keyboard and introduces a small amount of space between your fingers and the iPad’s touchscreen keys, so that his fingers trigger letters as he presses a key.

Touch-typing and hunt-and-peck typing use different parts of the brain. Touch-typing uses what’s called muscle memory, which enables an action to become automatic. Touch-typing is like riding a bicycle, or playing a musical instrument, or just walking.

Hunt-and-peck typing “hijacks” the thinking part of your brain, making it unavailable for more important tasks. Your brain is monopolized by having to ask a series of questions and issue a series of instructions: "Where is the 'W’? Touch that spot." "Where is the 'H’? Touch that spot."

iPad Dominates Tablet Internet Traffic

Looking at our stats here at iPadJailbreak.com, 84% of our mobile traffic in the past month has came from the iPad, with nearly another 11% coming from the iPhone. This leaves a little more that 5% of traffic for other mobile devices, although our site is surely biased as it focuses on the iPad. According to ComScore though, 97% of tablet traffic on the internet is performed by an iPad. I would suspect that 95% of the devices currently in consumers hands are an iPad since Apple has a 9 month head start.

This chart below from Business Insider shows the breakdown for different countries tablet usage.

Apple Touchscreen Patent

Apple applied for a patent back in 2007 which focused on people using their fingers to interact with a touchscreen, and software reacting to the gesture. Now 4 years later, the USPTO has awarded the patent to Apple.

This patent seemingly would give Apple the power to halt sales and production of competiting touchscreen tablets and smartphones. Apple will likely require the competiton to pay a patent licensing fee for touchscreen devices sold in the United States.

This will likely only stir the pot between Samsung and Apple regarding their similar devices.
