iPad iOS 5 Revealed At WWDC

According to a press release regarding WWDC topics:

"Apple will unveil its next generation software – Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering."

Now I know that one of the first things you all want is a jailbreak for iOS 5, and that will likely take a couple weeks/months to find the exploits. But here are some of the things we are expecting to see in iOS 5 for the iPad/iPhone.

Dual-display app mode

One of the best ways to utilize the thick screen, would be to run Mail and Safari apps side by side in landscape mode. In portrait mode these dual running apps could be the top half and bottom half.

Better Notifications

Apple is looking to release a “completely revamped” notifications system in iOS 5. Apple's iOS notifications have been clunky and annoying for quite some time, there is much room for improvement in the current version of iOS.

Widgets

Apple’s dashboard widgets for OS X may provide some insight for iOS, hopefully providing similar live updating information at a glance without opening. This would make peoples overall experience with the iPhone and iOS much smoother!

Nuance Voice Recognition Technology

Dragonsoft Naturally Speaking creators have reportedly been in discussions with Apple to bring voice recognition to iOS and eliminate the need for any buttons on iDevices.

iCloud Media Stream and Photo Stream

iCloud could likely handle all your email, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes and more across computers. But iCloud will separate itself from Mobile Me with Cloud Syncing, Control and Music to allow users library scanning and syncing instead of the uploading requirement.

Tablet Docking For iPhone 4

It seemed like just minutes after Asus showcased the Padfone, then ECS put out a demo of their tablet solution for housing the iPhone 4 at Computex 2011 . It basically takes your iPhone’s video imagery and outputs it through the HDMI to the display which is 9.7-inch and 4:3 format like the iPad. The tablet "docking station" also has a SD card slot, two USB ports along with a front-facing camera.

It is expected that this accessory will run around $200 and should work with all future iOS devices as well, assuming Apple doesn't ditch their dock configuration. This device is still un-named...what would you call it? iPhonePad?

iPad Launched In Russia

Today the iPad 2 was launched in the Ukraine, Brazil and Russia to authorized resellers. The black market prices for iPad 2 in Russia are ranging from $1200-$1500 dollars depending on the specification.

Looks like they are pretty excited. Official iPad 2 prices in Russia are 30 percent to 40 percent greater than in the United States, where the base model goes for $499 and I picked up my 3G 64GB iPad 2 for $829. The disparity is largely down to high import duties, taxes and bureaucratic hurdles according to Kazbegi of Renaissance Capital.

iPad and iPhone LCDs To Improve Outdoors with Shades

Recently when my wife was driving, I found myself playing an important game of Angry Birds Rio, and my wife asked why I was peering over my sunglasses. "The screen is impossible to see through my shades" I stated...but Apple may have a fix for for this polarizing issue in an upcoming patent recently filed.

The polarized sunglasses only allows in light which is vertically vibrating, the LCD light vibrates the wrong way and makes your iPad (or iPhone) seem signficantly dimmed. Apple has gotten a lot of criticism, some from me, but mostly by the Kindle in that the display is very poor in direct sunlight.

Apple’s new invention suggests a modified LCD with a thin layer which “receives the linearly-polarized light on one surface, converts the linearly-polarized light to circularly-polarized light, and then emits the circularly-polarized light from another surface”.

Disgusting iPad Used In The Bathroom By 25% Of Users, No I Don't Wanna Borrow It!

Last week, Nielsen Company revealed the results of a survey of nearly 12,000 Tablet, Smartphone and eReader owners to find out where and when they were being used. According to the results below, 70% use their iPad while watching TV, 57% while lying in bed...and nearly half break our their iPad while with friends/family. But before you borrow someones iPad or iPhone, you need to realized that 1 in 4 of these are regularly used in the bathroom.

Many remember George Costanza being forced to buy a book that he took into the bathroom with him, he later tried to return it but was denied since the book was 'Flagged' as a bathroom book. Below is the overall time distribution for the various locations:

Tablet owners noted that about 30 percent of the time spent with their tablet was while watching TV as compared to 21 percent while lying in bed. Smartphone users watch TV while using their device 20 percent of the time as compared to 11 percent lying in bed. eReader were only used 15 percent of the time spent watching TV, but usually used it in bed at 37 percent of their usage time.

Definitely think about that next time you borrow your friends iPad or worse yet, put their iPhone up to your ear! Nielsen has been wrong in the past...hopefully this is off as well.

SmartCover Drop Test For iPad 2 (Video)

In the video below, you will see two different iPad 2s being dropped face first onto a concrete sidewalk from just under 3 feet (waist height). The unprotected iPad suffers predictable damage, and the screen shatters completely and spiderwebs. The Smart Cover equipped iPad survives the drop without noticable damage.

The 2nd test involves a 5 foot drop from shoulder height, but the iPad 2 SmartCover was unable to protect the screen from a 9 iron golf club...I want my money back Steve!

iPad 2 Production Down

According to iSuppli market research, it appears the Apple iPad 2 may have a production shortfall of nearly 500,000 units in the 2nd quarter due to the fatal explosion at Foxconn late last week. Total iPad 2 production capacity at the Chengdu site is around 500,000 units per month. Should the explosion result in a production shutdown until the end of June a production stoppage of half a million units could result.

A production stoppage determination is still pending investigation, but the livelihood of the workers and safety should certainly come before the bottom line.

Half Million iOS Apps Approved

Apple has recently approved the App Store’s 500,000th iOS application according to Chomp, 148Apps.biz and Chillingo, meaning that the company has approved half a million apps in just 34 months. We will likely get an update on App Store figures from Steve Jobs, this June 6, 2011 at WWDC.

In comparison, the Android Market has just under 300,000 approved apps with 3 billion app downloads, as compared to Apple’s 10 billion app downloads with $3 billion in sales expected in 2011.

iPad 2 Jailbreak Gearing Up

According to the Chronic Dev Team, in their "State of the Chronic" address, the iPad 2 jailbreak will be coming in the next couple weeks. p0sixninja (Joshua Hill) announced this "deadline" for the iPad 2 jailbreak to put a swift kick-in-the-ass to all the stakeholders involved.

From Chronic Dev Team:
As I’m sure many people have heard, Josh (posixninja) has recently been quoted saying the iPad 2 jailbreak is coming in “weeks”, I know I have been very publicly abrasive and non-commital on giving any kind of timeframe or comment on this matter, but at the behest of Josh (in conjunction with his need for a swift kick to the ass for motivation) we’re ALL going to hold him to that!!! I’m not going to get into extensive detail about this, but what I will say one of the missing puzzle pieces may have reared its head and cast a glance in our direction… take from that what you will.

Angry Birds 3D Edition?

There was a demo floating around of an iPad 2 app that displayed 3D images by taking advantage of the forward facing camera to track your head movements. Now the iPad 2 (and iPhone 4) app is available in the App Store to provide a 3D effect on your iPhone 4 and iPad 2. This app is just a demo for i3D capabilities, but the technology could result in a new game or reader using this concept.

i3D is available for FREE from the Apple App Store.

Tracking head positioning appears to provide a nice 3D look with your iPad 2, now I am just waiting for an i3D version of Angry Birds to arrive.

Angry Birds 3D anyone?

Apple Store 2.0, 10th Anniversary Edition

Apple took off the wraps on "Apple Store 2.0" this past weekend which essentially replaced thousands of paper signs with iPad 2 kiosks to improve the retail experience. Each iPad 2 includes interactive features for the nearby product being displayed along with a "specialist" button to bring the sales rep over to assist with a purchase.

Watch the video below for a preview of a 2.0 Apple Store

These iPads being used by Apple next to each iDevice or computer are special units attached to a mounting block which is glued to the main table.

I'll let ColcaSac discuss the Uintah materials as they do it more dramatically.

The Uintah is made with a natural dark taupe, heavy duty 20 oz hemp canvas. You are seeing the natural color of the hemp fiber--no processing or dying with this fabric. The hemp is grown and harvested in rural China, where it grows quickly and plentifully. Hemp is grown naturally without pesticides, is easy on the soil, and is nature's strongest natural fiber (if you don't count the spider web).

Best of luck to all!
