Xoom Update Coming

According to a flyer from Verizon...an update is coming!

Verizon and Motorola were poised to issue another software update to the Xoom tablet earlier today, it appears they may have pulled back this update at the last minute. Not quite as smooth as an iOS update comes from Apple...but they Apple has had trouble getting all the bugs worked out!

Apple, iPhone Market Share Doubles

Numbers for the mobile phone market were released by IDC this morning and show that the market grew by nearly 20% year-to-year in the 1st quarter of 2011. They report that worldwide smartphone growth was especially fast in the Asia/Pacific region, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. They have stated that 371.8 million units were shipped in 2011Q1 as compared to 310.5 million in the 2010Q1.

Nokia continues to hold the top spot as the world’s largest mobile handset maker (now teamed up with Microsoft), although their market share dropped over 5% as compared to last year. Apple is maintaining the fourth spot and posted the highest growth rate among the top 5, now with over 5% of the market share and 114.9% increase from last year.

AT&T Issues 2nd Warning For iPhone Tethering

It appears that after AT&T warned their highest data users last month, they are now going after the next level down of high data users. It certainly isn't too difficult for AT&T to determine if a user is tethering their smartphone since the browser and OS characteristics utilizing the iPhone connection are from a desktop computer.

If you are oblivious, iPhone owners on AT&T use jailbreak apps to allow them turn their phones into Wi-Fi hotspots and share their data connection with tablets, notebooks or other devices. I have used my rooted Droid for the past 18 months to tether to my laptop (at relatively low data usage rates ~ 2GB per month) with no issues. I'm sure that since Verizon and AT&T have added data plans and enabled tethering on the iPhone with a fee...they will start to look for abusers like myself and maybe you.

iPad Currently 74% Market Share For Tablets

According to a report by Canalys this morning, the global PC market grew by 7% during the first 3 months of this year. HP had a 16.6% share of the shipments, 2nd is Acer (12.8%), then Dell (11.3%) who overtook Apple this quarter (9.5%), then Lenovo (9.2%), and the rest (40.6%).

According to Canalys, Apple’s iPad products accounted for 74% of the 6.4 million tablets shipped globally. “The iPad represents a real threat to PC and consumer electronics vendors, as it is capable of replacing devices in a range of other categories”.

iOS Peaks Developer Interests

Appcelerator and IDC surveyed over 2,700 Appcelerator Titanium developers 2 weeks ago on their perceptions surrounding mobile OS priorities, feature priorities, and mobile development plans in 2011. The app developer report shows that momentum is shifting back toward Apple as fragmentation and tepid interest in current Android tablets chip away at Google’s recent gains.

In the above chart, 86% are interested in developing for iOS tablets (iPad, iPad 2) is at 86% while Android tablets has fallen to just 71% of those polled being interested. Apple iPad apps have grown to over 75,000 iPad apps late last month and is now over 80,000 app titles. iPhone app development still peaks developer interest at 91%, with android smartphone devices also getting high interest rates at 85%.

iOS Location Tracking, Apple Speaks Up

Apple has finally broken their silence regarding the location-tracking database scandal with the iPhones and 3G iPads which were running iOS 4 or newer. Apple has stated that never have and never will track iOS 4 devices. Apples purpose for the database file in question (consolidated.db) is to “help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested.” The next iOS 4 release will "limit the size of the database file" to limit the historical information as it is not necessary in calculating your current location.

Apple's promised iOS firmware update, due “sometime in the next few weeks”, that will also encrypt the location data file on your device. In limiting the historical information stored in the database, Apple stated: “reduce the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone, ceases backing up this cache, and deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off”.

Obama Has iPad 2 3G

Do you think the President is a Verizon or AT&T guy...I bet he has an iPad 2 version that 'could' go global which would deter him away from the Verizon version. I wonder if they just went ahead and installed the FBI or CIA app?

Obama may have discussed his new iPad 2 wishlist at the White House dinner a couple months back. He probably didn't have to wait in line at a Verizon store last month like I did....

Cydia Back Online, Down 86 hours!

After 86 hours of downtime, Jay Freeman (saurik) who is the man behind Cydia has confirmed that the jailbreak app is finally back online after an issue with Amazon’s EC2 cloud computing service (Reddit had this same issue with Amazon Cloud). Saurik posted a message via to Twitter last night shown below:

This Cydia downtime limited Cydia’s functionality for users, making it nearly impossible to purchase packages, using the ThemeCenter, and managing Cydia accounts. Some users had a little success with accessing these services more recently, but the intermittent periods of downtime as Amazon’s EC2 service slowly came back online appear to be over!

Final Fantasy III For iPad

Ah, nostalgia...Square-Enix just released the iPad version of its 1990 hit Final Fantasy III. it was the first title of the Final Fantasy series to sell a million copies. This game will keep you entertained an entire 24 hour period if your Easter weekend is indeed that boring. There is a large world to explore in this game, with many quests to complete...just remember to head outside and enjoy the weekend with your friends and family!

This app isn't getting off on the right foot with people that purchased the iPhone version as well...
"Final Fantasy III is an amazing game and the transition to the iOS devices makes this the near definitive version of the classic (I say 'near' since this release is missing the CG opening sequence found in the DS version, a small annoyance but not necessary). However my two gripes with this is that I paid $37 for both versions."
"However, this is just a way to get more money from us, why not combining to a universal version? I am a iPad user, and played iPhone version FF3 for DAYS! How about my saving data? There should be a way to transfer data between two versions... Like sims3."
Final Fantasy III is available for $16.99 from the App Store.

Q2 2011 iPad Sales, 4.69 Million

Yesterday, Apple reported product sales during their quarterly earnings call and missed analyst expectations for iPad sales. Estimates were between 6 and 8 million iPads for the quarter, but Apple missed this estimate with 2nd quarter sales reported at 4.69 million iPads.

For other parts of business, Apple exceeded expectations of Wall Street. iPhone sales were reported at 18.65 million for the quarter as compared to estimates around 16 million. The addition of the Verizon iPhone in mid-February appears to be successful with Verizon separately reporting 2.2 million iPhone activations (AT&T activated 3.6 million iPhones as well).

Air Penguin for iPad

There is a new top dog in the Apple iPhone App Store, it is Air Penguin which basically came out of nowhere to overtake OmNom in Cut The Rope and other 'Angry Birds' variations. Air Penguin is a pretty simple tilt-control game, much like Doodle Jump with 2-axis rotation instead of only one. The goal is to get the bouncing, sliding, flipping penguin from one ice landing to another. Land incorrectly and your penguin will slash into the water.

The levels (as with most games) get more difficult the further you get into the game. You need to collect fish to exchange for power ups, these are also available as an in-app purchase. The Survival Mode is engaging and it's one those simple pick-up-and-play games where you can play for a short time anywhere.

Air Penguin is available for $0.99 from the App Store.

What is your opinion for the iPad? Need an HD version?

iPad 2 Shipping Delay Improves

Yesterday just ahead of earnings, the iPad 2 shipping delay dropped from 2-3 weeks to 1-2 weeks. Some international online Apple stores still remain at the original 2-3 weeks though. Just over 2 weeks ago Apple dropped the estimated shipping times to 2-3 weeks from 3-4 weeks after the international launch of the iPad 2.

Is Apple quickly catching up their supply to demand, or had the demand dropped off for the iPad 2?
Thoughts...

iPad 3G Tracking Encryption

Today it was revealed that iPads and iPhones have been tracking and storing location data and backing it up to iTunes every time you sync. The location data stored on your computer is accessible to malicious apps or anyone else who uses your machine and is unencrypted but should be.

Steps to encrypt iPad location data
  • Plug in your iPhone or iPad into your Mac's USB port and launch iTunes.
  • Select your device under "Devices" in iTunes.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the summary page and check the box next to "Encrypt iPhone backup."
  • Choose a password that will be used to access your phone's backups

iPad 3G Tracking File

This morning O'Reilly Radar published a nice technical article discussing that all Apple devices have been recording location data since the launch of iOS 4. So if you've been hauling your 3G iPad (or iPad 2) by your side for the past months, you likely have a laundry list of locations and time stamps.

The existence of this data on your iPad or iPhone has definite security and privacy implications associated with it. To make matters worse, the data file is unencrypted, unprotected, and is also duplicated on any machine you've used to sync your iPad. There currently is no evidence that this data is being transmitted or made available by anyone outside of you and your devices. Intentions of Apple, and the use of this data is also unknown at this time.

An immediate step you could take if you wish is to encrypt your backups through iTunes by clicking on your device in iTunes and then check "Encrypt iPad Backup" under the "Options" area.

If you are trying to remember the name of the hotel you stayed in last thanksgiving during your trip to the east coast, check out this handy iPhone tracking app. If you suspect that your spouse is cheating, the evidence may be existing on his iPhone...definite privacy issues!

Apple Q2 Financials Due Today

At 4:00 PM Today (CST), Apple will hold their 2011Q2 earnings call to announce their financial results, or promptly after the market closes. Early this year, Apple reported 2011Q1 earnings with record revenue of $26 billion and over 7 million iPads sold in the quarter. Todays call is expected to cover iPad and iPad 2 (only 21 days) sales in the quarter as well as report iPhone and Mac sales.

AT&T announced this morning that they activated 3.6 million iPhones in this past quarter and 322,000 3G tablets. In February, Apple ended their exclusivity to AT&T for the iPhone by providing Verizon a CDMA version. The earnings call today may also provide some insight into Verizon iPhone launch and sales.

Tune in this afternoon, here is a link to an Audio only stream of Apple's earnings call.

Crackle Streaming For iPad

Apple blocked Sony’s Reader app from making it into the App Store. As Time Warner Cable and other providers are beginning to gain traction with television streaming apps, Sony has now joined the club.

Sony has been trying and working hard to bringing a new application to iOS which could showcase Sony's video content. Sony’s free Crackle app was approved by Apple (on Monday) and gives you access to hundreds of movies from Sony Pictures Classics, Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, and Tri-Star libraries. Also included is a variety of TV episodes such as Seinfeld, Married with Children.

Sony is providing high-quality video streaming through Crackle, since this is a free application you'll encounter short ads that appear during the video content. The overall selection of movies is much more limited as compared to other services like Netflix, but this free app includes more than 200 video titles.

The Crackle app interface is quite simple to use in browsing for movies and TV shows, and viewing featured and "most popular" movies. The application enables you to pause and resume playback from where you left off. There is also a personalized queue management system for viewing content within the iOS application or online at Crackle.com. This app definitely has some possibilities and by starting off free with minimal advertisement is a good way to get off on the right foot!

Crackle is available for FREE from the App Store and is a universal iOS app.

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline For iPad

I just downloaded Asphalt 6: Adrenaline for my iPad 2 this past weekend and thought I should share my opinion on this iPad game app. The main reason I bought it was due to the promotion this past weekend when it was on sale for $0.99 (and was in the top spot in the App Store). After my app was ready, I just jumped right into "Career mode" to start unlocking different races and better cars. Each race involves earning some dough and stars by drifting, finding shortcuts and wrecking your opponents cars.

I found the controls to be very simple, and the "on course" earning of $$ and Turbos. Using the turbos was a little tough at first since the screen turns a blackish-blue in a Fast and Furious style while your are trying to keep your car on the road. On the downside, the advanced accelerometer controls were a little difficult to get the used to.

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD is available for $6.99 from the App Store.

How to jailbreak your iOS 4.3.2 iPad with redsn0w 0.9.6rc14

One of the easiest ways to jailbreak your iPad is with redsn0w from the iPhone Dev Team. If you missed it, here is a step-by-step procedure to get your iPad into DFU mode. I'm not sure if it is necessary to provide these instructions with a quick video showing the steps for jailbreaking your iPad with redsn0w. Drop a comment if to make a request,

The 4.3.2 untethered jailbreak works on all devices that support iOS 4.3.2 except for the iPad 2:

iPhone3GS
iPhone4 (GSM)
iPod touch 3G
iPod touch 4G
iPad1

Here are the steps (screenshots were taken with redsn0w 0.9.6rc13b, here is the change log for redsn0w 0.9.6rc14):

Step 1: For this tutorial, you’ll need redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 which you can download from the iPhone Dev Team blog or from here for Mac or Windows. Make sure you grab the latest version (0.9.6rc14) and just drop it on your desktop.

Step 2: You'll need an actual 4.3.2 firmware file. If you don’t know where to find it on your hard drive, just download it to your desktop from here (direct link). Make sure you download the iPad file, 4.3.2.

Step 3: Open redsn0w and click on "browse", pull up your 4.3.2 firmware from step 2 and select it.

Step 4: The software will then provide a couple different options before continuing, all you'll likely need is the Cydia icon. Make sure there is a checkmark by "Install Cydia" then just click next.

Step 5: Plug your iPad into your computer and turn it off. Get ready to follow some onscreen instructions as RedSn0w will walk your through a few steps to put your iPad into DFU mode.

Step 6: Once you are successful, redsn0w will begin updating your iPad firmware. This may not happen right away, just turn OFF your iPad, then ON to try it again.

Step 7: Once the software is done loading the exploit, your iPad will restarted, and your home screen should load up with the Cydia icon installed. Success!

The latest update to redsn0w has added the ability to set a custom boot animation,

iOS 4.3.2 iPad Jailbreak via redsn0w 0.9.6rc13

i0nic was quick to confirm that the vulnerability was for the iPad jailbreak in iOS 4.3.1 was not fixed in iOS 4.3.2. It appears that redsn0w 0.9.6RC13 is ready to jailbreak your iPad after iOS 4.3.2 was just released a week ago.

The jailbreak for your iPad running iOS 4.3.2 is quite simple with basically the same steps to jailbreak via redsn0w for the previous iOS 4.3.1 version. Just download redsn0w 0.9.6rc13 (Mac, Windows) and the iOS 4.3.2 IPSW file. Then just connect your iPad to your computer, run redsn0w and follow the onscreen instructions much like the previous version.

This again...does not support the iPad 2.

iOS 4.3.2 Jailbreak Confirmed

i0n1c has confirmed that "Apple has been nice" and didn't remove the exploit (vulnerability) which made the iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak possible on the 1st generation iPad. Stefan Esser (@i0n1c) just confirmed via twitter that his 4.3.1 untethered exploit is still in iOS 4.3.2, meaning that there will soon be a full untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.2 for all iOS devices (excluding the iPad 2...boo).

The tethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2 is already available using both redsn0w and PwnageTool, step by step tutorials are available from RedmondPie if interested...I'm not, sticking with my untethered redsn0w iPad jailbreak on iOS 4.3.1 for now.

Adobe Flash Coming To iPad, Xoom

After nearly 4 years of the iOS platform, Adobe is still having difficulty being able to get Flash Player on Apple’s mobile platform. Many sided with Adobe on this one a couple of years ago calling this exclusion unreasonable, but the latest failures for Android Honeycomb to deliver decent Flash performance justifies Apple's decision. Even the Frash hacks bogged down the 1st generation iPad and the PlayBook had problems bring Flash to their Blackberry Tablet.

This sneak peak of our future technology demonstrates how publishers will stream from Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder through an Adobe Flash Media Server out to the Motorola Xoom tablet and Apple iPad tablet via html.
