iPad Versus Xoom Speed

CNet's Crave ran a side-by-side competition with the site loading speeds of the iPad as compared to the Motorola Xoom. Each tablet loaded three different Web sites for the tests: CNET.com, CBSNews.com, and GiantBomb.com. The tablets were connected to the same closed network with no other devices on it, with the router about 5 feet away.

Now we need a comparison of the Motorola Xoom on Verizon's network with the Apple iPad 3G on AT&T's network!

Xoom Jailbreak, NO 4G FOR YOU

I guess the Android crew doesn't really call it an Android Jailbreak, they have decided to stick with the term...rooted. I still have my classic original Motorola Droid that I picked up in November 2009...and it is rooted. My rooted cell and WiFi iPad make quite a pair as I have said in the past...

Well now it appears that the Xoom has already been rooted and someone decided to ask Motorola if they could still get the 4G LTE upgrade for their Xoom if it was rooted. The short and sweet answer...NO.

The more longwinded answer... "you only need to flash back to factory settings/software temporarily when you send your Xoom to Motorola for the free 4G upgrade"

Sounds like the same stance the Apple has regarding jailbroken iDevice's...

Yerba Buena Prepped For Apple (iPad) Event

Well, as many avid iPad owners (and those looking to buy their first) know...a little Apple shindig is going on in San Francisco in a couple days. Just over a year ago, we were at the Yerba Buena Center...anticipating Apple's "latest creation" and then had to wait TOO LONG to get one. This time it is expected that new iPad unveiled will be promptly available for purchase.

The numberous colorful dots designed at the Yerba Buena Center likely is sending a message at the Apple event on Wednesday. A thinner, lighter, faster iPad is expected by many...along with a couple nice cameras and an increase in the RAM. This iPad upgrade is being regarded as a small step improvement of the iPad, much like the (somewhat disappointing) MacBook refresh that occurred last week with the "highlight" being introduction of ThunderBolt and some beefy processor power.

If we have to wait for the doubled-resolution for the iPad...so be it. iPadJailbreak.com will be ordering a new iPad to giveaway...but I may pick up a 2nd one for myself depending if any light is shed on an iPad 2 HD this fall.

DirecTV iPad App Remote

Last week, DirecTV announced an upcoming iPad app with "coming soon" on their website as a teaser to bring your control of your movies, TV and sports from your iPad. Today, the DirecTV Cinema App is available for the iPad for FREE. The DirecTV App allows you to organize your movies, favorite channels, and select your upcoming recordings.

Features:
  • Highly customizable remote control functionality right on your iPad.
  • Browse and discover movies, shows and sports - without interrupting the show you are currently watching on TV.
  • Set recordings or channel tune instantly, and access more information on shows, cast & crew, with parental ratings.
  • Access sports scores and schedules and set your favorite teams.
Recording requires a Wi-Fi, Edge or 3G network connection to schedule. Remote control requires a Wi-Fi connection to your home network. Lacking it that ability to stream video to the iPad, Dish Network provides an iPad App to allow you to enjoy your favorite shows while traveling as well.

DirectTV is available for FREE from the Apple App Store.

What Is The iPad 2 Weight?

A recent post at Fully Equipped discusses the iPad 2 and how the current iPad is too heavy? I really don't understand that complaint...it doesn't seem that heavy to me. I use my iPad around 2 hours a day on average, and the weight is the least of my worries...

If shaving off a few ounces to the weight of the iPad 2 is going to increase the cost of the iPad more than twenty bucks, then I think Apple should leave it alone. My MacBook Air is only slightly more heavy, lugging both my iPad and my MacBook Air still weighs in at under 6 pounds including the weight of my Muzetto Waterfield case. If a substantial weight reduction (say 25%) can be attained along with our iPad 2 wishlist...then by all means Apple, cut the weight of the iPad 2!

iPhone 5 Display Size Photoshop

According to this leak from a Chinese reseller of iPhone parts, this below is the front digitizer panel for the next iPhone expected this spring/summer. Instead, it appears that someone was bored and created this photoshopped version of the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 has been rumored for the past couple weeks to have a larger display (as well as a smaller iPhone version in the works), essentially pushing the Apple iPhone from 3.5-inch to a 4-inch display. Many have thought the increased display size may be utilized with an iOS navigation bar along the bottom of the device, but this was assuming the screen width to remain constant. According to the leaked parts, it appears that the screen is becoming both wider and longer.

OS X Lion 10.7 Features

Apple released Mac OS X 10.7 for developers to begin testing and many new features are being realized. With the upcoming release of this major update to OS X, here is a quick summary of what is coming for Mac users.
  • Dropbox-like functionality for MobileMe storage
  • Recovery partition to startup HD, eliminiating need for OS X installer disk
  • TRIM support for write to SSD
  • PowerPC application support removed
  • Find My Mac functionality incorporated into MobileMe
  • Front Row removed
  • Podcast Producer allows users to create shows/episodes with seamless editing, upload and sharing
OS X Lion developer edition has been seeded at many torrent sites, be cautious if you can't wait for the official release from Apple this summer. I wonder what this means for the Mac App Store

Motorola Xoom Droid Available

Well, as promised... I headed off to Best Buy today to check out the new Motorola Xoom and there was one on display with no apparent fanfare or excitement. Took me about 2 minutes to figure how to wake the dang thing up since no one had used it lately...the Best Buy folks were clueless on the device. After I unplugged the power supply and replugged it in the display lit up and I got it going. The Motorola Xoom on display seemed nice, but I was unable to test the WiFi or 3G since no connection was available for the Xoom...

Access inside of the Motorola Xoom was quite easy to get, requiring only a Torx screwdriver to get the main part of the cover off. Motorola is going to be taking A LOT of these apart to swap out the 3G chip for the 4G chips this summer.

iFixit's opinion:
A seasoned technician can perform this swap in less than 10 minutes. Heck, a donkey could probably pull it off in less than two hours. We have no idea why a customer couldn’t just go to a Verizon store and have on-site representatives enable 4G on the spot, just like they’re able to transfer mobile contacts and perform other activation procedures.
Well, I brought some cash with me to check out the Xoom Droid...but now the cash is on my counter waiting to get a peak at the iPad 2 next week before I make a decision! Which tablet are you leaning toward purchasing?

Rumor: iPad 2 Getting And Not Getting

Well, it looks like the next iPad will be arriving without a SD slot or retina display...according to Engadget. Engineering issues was provided as the reason these originally planned iPad enhancements were scrapped. Items that are going to be included in the next iPad are as follows:
  • A5 CPU
  • Increased RAM to 512 MB
  • Thinner and flatter exterior
  • Dual cameras
How about a USB port...anti-glare screen?

I guess we'll have to wait until Apple's March 2nd event to find out for sure, I just hope the availability of the new iPad isn't more than a week past the Apple event.

LifeProof For iPad

After seeing what the LifeProof iPhone case is capable of, I really thing an iPad LifeProof case is a good idea! They dunked Greg Tseng (Tagged CEO) iPhone 4 into a bowl, covered it with ketchup and mustard, covered it with dirt and flowers...then tossed it into a fish tank of water to clean it back off. Greg's iPhone was protected by the LifeProof case, which is shockproof and waterproof. The most impressive part, is that the case adds only 1/16th of an inch (1.5 mm)...increasing the overall iPhone 4 thickness from 9.3mm to just under 11mm.

Over $1 million was invested to develop the Lifeproof case (and more than 20 patents have been filed), pricing for the iPhone 4 LifeProof case is at $69. The LifeProof case turns your iPhone into an nice underwater camera, or a shower time iPod player I guess.

We've been told the shock protection is effective at "typical drop heights", which are assumed to be from 3 to 6 feet. An iPad LifeProof case with the same capabilities would likely run close to $100, so the market might be limited to the business users for iPads...like a waiter/waitress.

An iPad LifeProof case would be much nicer than the alternative waterproof case.

iOS 4.3 GoldMaster

Apple has been carefully saving the iOS 4.3 version, giving the iOS 4.2.5 and 4.2.6 names to the interstitial Verizon specific versions of Apple's mobile operating system. iOS 4.3 has already been through beta, and will likely be debuted at the Apple event next week. The iPad 2 may be immediately available for purchase following the Apple Event, or may specifically announce a launch date later that week.

iOS 4.3 is finally out of the beta stage with the release of iOS 4.3 GoldMaster. I bet it doesn't take very long for the dev folks to throw together an iOS 4.3 PwnageTool to jailbreak the iPad.

The iPhone 5 will not be any part of next weeks event most likely!

Apple Getting People To Wait On Xoom?

Well the timing of Apple's announcement for their upcoming event was definitely a nice strategic move. Waiting until the day before the iPad's best competition, the Motorola Xoom, is launched to announce an event. Apple left no doubt as to the topic in this upcoming event with announcment flyer, this delay is causing many of those that read Droid Life to consider waiting to see what Apple has in store for their next Tablet.

From the poll above, nearly half of people interested in a tablet are waiting for the Apple announcement. I will be stopping at Best Buy tonight to try out the new tablet, with cash in-hand.

4G LTE Conversion, Xoom

It appears that Verizon is not going to charge extra for 4G access for Motorola XOOM, but owners are going to have to take to make their tablets LTE compatible. Approximately 90 days after today, customers will be able to send their XOOM tablet back to Motorola, free of charge, for the LTE upgrade. This process, according to a Talking Points data sheet, should take six business days.

The text above also notes that users “do not have to change their [data] plan when transitioning to 4G LTE."

I wonder if Apple has plans to offer something similar for the upcoming new iPad 2. So far it seems that the Xoom may have a leg up on the new iPad, Apple and Verizon may be working out the changes now...maybe that was one of the "last minute changes" that Apple made?

Apple Already Getting Yerba Buena Center Ready

It looks like Apple is already starting to fix up the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco for the iPad 2 launch next week. It seems they are getting an early start on this, must not be any other events this weekend....

This design is quite similar to that of last year’s iPad event....see below!

FireCore seas0npass Jailbreak for Apple TV

The FireCore developer team has created a program much like the iPad PwnageTool for your Apple TV. This tool is dubbed the name Seas0nPass and will work on your 2nd generation Apple TV, it creates custom firmware file to load and install non-Apple approved apps. This jailbreak requires tethering for boot of your Apple TV, much like your other iOS 4.2.1 Apple TV jailbreaks. Hopefully the tethering will go away once iOS 4.3 is launched.

According to FireCore LLC, a new version of seas0npass is being based on an untethered jailbreak for the AppleTV 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software. All credit for the untethered jailbreak process goes to the Chronic Dev Team.

seas0npass is available for free download

iPad 2 Apple Event Next Week

After contacting our source that stated an Apple Event is slated for Tuesday, March 1st...stated that he has no new information and stands by this date. But according to All Things Digital and Kara Swisher, the media event for the iPad 2 is slated for March 2nd. The WSJ is siting "multiple sources" which may have the date nailed down a little better than our source. The location appears to still be be in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Likely items for the agenda:
  • Verizon iPhone Lackluster Sales Figures
  • iOS 4.3 Official Launch Information
  • MacBook Pro/Air Redesign
  • iMac Refresh
  • iPad 2 Details being shared
Other items with potential updates:
  • Steve Jobs Health Update (possible attendance?)
  • iPhone Mini Update
  • iPhone 5 details
My hope is still that the iPad 2 unveiled next week will include an increased resolution...what are you hoping to hear next week?

GeoHot Donation Blog

GeoHot created his blog, GeoHot Got Sued on blogspot to help raise donations for upcoming legal fees. If you didn't realize, George Hotz is battling Sony for jailbreak firmware that he released. U.S. District Court has already ruled in Sony's favor in granting a temporary restraining order forcing Hotz to remove all mention of his jailbreak from the web.

According to GeoHot's blog:

"Sony has five lawyers, I have two, I'd like to level the playing field, and really get some hard hitters in there. I have already racked up over $10,000 in legal bills; donate whatever you feel like."

Jailbreaking deemed legal, Officially!

"For example, I believe Apple has every right to lock down their iPhone in the factory as much as they want, but once it's paid for and mine, I have the right to unlock it, smash it, jailbreak it, look at it, and hack on it."

Hopefully this court battle doesn't keep him from assisting in iOS jailbreaks in the future!

Apple Acoustic Patent

According to Patently Apple, it appears that Apple is looking to incorporate audio transducers around the perimeter of their Laptops (MacBook Pro) and Tablets (iPad). With Apple's recent experimentation with gestures in iOS 4.3 beta and the potential removal of the home screen button, this patent seems along a similar track.

The incorporation of this sort of interaction would be interesting to see on a MacBook, probably not the new MacBook line that is expected later this week.

Motorola XOOM at $599 with Verizon Contract

Verizon Wireless confirmed today the plans to launch Motorola's Honeycomb tablet on Thursday. According to the press release, Verizon will provide a $200 discount on the XOOM Droid tablet purchase with a 2 year contract. The tablet will also include a free upgrade to 4G LTE, but will likely not be included in the current 3G tablet contracts currently available from Verizon.

From the Verizon Press release:

The first device to run Google’s new Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, the Motorola XOOM will be available for purchase from Verizon Wireless for $599.99 with a new two-year customer agreement or $799.99 without a contract. Wireless 3G data service for the Motorola XOOM will begin at $20 monthly access for 1GB. The Motorola XOOM will be upgradeable to 4G LTE service at no additional charge in the second quarter of 2011.

Motorola XOOM is built around a 1GHz dual-core processor and 10.1-inch widescreen HD display. The sleek, stylish design features a front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video chats, as well as a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera that captures video in 720p HD.

iPad 2 Delay, NOOOO!

Bloomberg has reported a research not by Yuanta Securities which is buzzing now, apparently this rumor suggests that the 2nd generation iPad will be delayed until June because of production bottlenecks. A June launch is really fishy since the iPhone refresh is typically occurs at that time, leaving many to have to choose between the high-priced iPad and iPhone.

The delay arose after Cupertino, California-based Apple made design changes before the Lunar New Year, according to a report by Vincent Chen and Alison Chen, analysts at Yuanta. Jill Tan, an Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong, declined to comment on the report.
Many people are receiving their tax refunds and may be holding off on the iPad with the rumors looming around an iPad 2 soon. If this rumor is true (likely not), then the Motorola Xoom could benefit from the later timing of the iPad 2 and thrive during launch with tax season upon us. Maybe most Apple buyers are savvy enough to not prevent a tax refund...and not let the goverment hold on to their money.

Other rumors suggest that Apple may be waiting until the dubbed iPad 3 (or iPad HD) with a retina display in launched this fall. Hopefully this upcoming Apple Retail Store meeting involves the iPad 2!

Hopefully the iPad doesn't stay stuck on the conveyor belt too long!

Upcoming Apple Secret Retail Employee Meeting

According to AppleInsider, it appears that Apple has asked its retail employees to agree and sign non-disclosure paperwork. This is likely foreshadowing an upcoming Apple media event, likely the event rumored for the first week of March.

Apple employees were asked yesterday to sign a non-disclosure form to enable them to attend the next employee meeting later this week. Apple typically hods it all hands meetings at the company retail stors after closing...but with no required agreement to be pre-signed.

The meeting could focus around the MacBook Pro refresh, or include an upcoming launch of the iPad 2. What do you see coming from Apple?

iPad Inventory Shortages

Well, much like the recent shortages and shipment delays for MacBook Pro models...similar issues are occurring with the current model of the iPad. Carphone Warehouse in the UK is an iPad reseller and is sold out of all 3 iPad 3G models and the 64GB iPad WiFi only model.

Other locations across the world experiencing shortages in iPad models:
  • Ingram Micro (major European distributor) is now sold out of the 16GB + 64GB WiFi, and 64GB 3G models
  • Future Shop of Canada is another major reseller with low or sold out stock.
  • Europe Orange and T-Mobile have reduced a subsidized iPad to £99 with a 24-month contract.
The date being rumored for the new MacBook Pro's is February 24th, but an Apple event is expected for March 1st. Hopefully the iPad and MacBook will be combined into a nice event early next week!

Motorola Xoom At Best Buy

Best Buy started to take preorders for the Motorola Xoom this past weekend. The most comparable iPad model to the Xoom is the iPad 3g 32GB, which is priced at $729 as compared to the Motorola Xoom 32GB at $799.

This price is justified by Motorola as this is a high-end tablet designed to compete with the Apple iPad (and iPad 2). Availablity of the Motorola Xoom Droid is February 24th...let the games begin!

MacBook Pro Update Coming

Hold off on your MacBook Pro purchase for now, it appears the Apple is prepping to refresh their MacBook Pro notebook line. In the past, the top-end Apple MacBook Pro were available for immediate shipment...as you can see below they have all dropped to "3-5 business days".

Some have rumored that the new MacBook Pro will be available with a Sandy Bridge processor, and others believe it will included an Intel Core i5 processor based on a recent advertisement.

Many believe that a MacBook refresh deserves an Apple Event, but no members of the press have received an invitation according to BGR. Launch is suspected for Thursday, February 24th...which is well ahead of the March 1st, 2011 Apple Event being rumored.

New MacBook Pro, Next Week?

Well our source is standing behind a March 1st Apple Event to announce some various new products at Apple like the iPad 2, new MacBook and a new iOS. But according to MacRumors, a new MacBook model is expected Thursday next week...which is an odd day for a product launch at Apple?

New MacBook Pro part numbers were leaked earlier today...MC720, MC721, MC723, MC724, and MC725.

Many of the rumors surfacing have the new MacBook Pro with a darker/sleeker exterior, no optical drive, and a Sandy Bridge processor. Hopefully most of these rumors are true, along with a reduced price for the collection as well. I've been using a MacBook Air for the past 4 months and think I would like to trade in my old Lenovo notebook for a shiny new MacBook Pro...I guess we'll find out next week maybe!

App Users Are Valued

The folks over at Mobclix have calculated the value which exists within app users across different platforms. The study used Apps with 500,000 downloads or 75,000 daily active users and based value on advertising revenue and not original purchase price. An active user was defined as a person which uses the app 3 times per week for more than 5 minutes.

The value of free games is less than half that of a utility app, mainly due to the fact that people play some games for hours per day. Android app value is 25-50% less as compared to iOS Apps, it would be interesting to see another graphic this summer comparing iOS on the iPad and Honeycomb on other tablets.

200 Million Minutes Per Day, Well Spent

With over 50 million downloads on iOS and Android, Angry Birds is now taking up a lot of peoples time. According to TheNextWeb, it appears that people worldwide are spending over 200,000,000 minutes a day playing Angry Birds Titles. I probably can attest to spending 10 minutes a day on average, or 5 hours a month depending on the Seasons release dates.

Peter Vesterbacka (Mighty Eagle), Rovio creator discusses Angry Birds success and future plans.

iPad, iPad 2 Locked Up Touch Panel Supply

According to a DigiTimes report, Apple will be getting 60% of the world's touch panel supply in 2011. Motorola Xoom, HP TouchPad, and the RIM PlayBook are likely reluctant to make a large cash commitment for touch panels as the future (and sales figures) are still quite uncertain.

Last spring and summer, the iPad suffered long delays in shipments which were believed to be caused by touch display shortages. The latest reports show that Apple has put forth a serious committment to ensure the iPad 2 doesn't have the same supply shortages. Apple wants to ship 40 million iPads in 2011, and if 40 million displays is 60% of the supply...this leaves only and estimated 26 million touch displays left for the competition.

Steve Jobs Unhealthy Photos

We at iPadJailbreak hate to see spreading rumors about life and death, but the National Enquirer and Gizmodo don't seem to mind messing with Steve Jobs personal life. Below are a few photos (possibly photoshopped) taken by someone at the Enquirer at breakfast, after they supposedly followed him from the Stanford Cancer Center.

Some doctors seem to think they can provide a prognosis based on these photos, but we will leave that to your determination. Last week Steve Jobs was seen on Apple's campus looking quite chipper...all we can do is hope (and pray) for these best and give Steve his privacy.

Sanjay Jha: Xoom 3G/4G $800, WiFi $600ish

Motorola has aimed their "high-end" tablet squarely at Apple with the attention to luxury and detail. "Competing with Apple you have to deliver premium products," Jha stated.

Motorola is somewhat a latecomer to the Tablet market, one that Apple and it's iPad have over a 75% stake. The Apple iPad (and iPad 2) is projected to reach 50 million in sales, Motorola and their Xoom would be thrilled to snag 20% of their market away.

Jha also expelled the rumors that the WiFi Motorola Xoom would require a service contract with a carrier. The $800 price tag is and unsubsidized price, it could be likely to see a 3G Motorola Xoom at Verizon for $599 with a contract. Or the price may depend on the amount of data associated with your Verizon data plan.

Verizon Wireless data plans look like...

1GB - $20
3GB - $35
5GB - $50
10GB - $80

...for the different monthly plans.

Verizon iPhone, Lackluster Sales

According to a recent post on BGR, it appears that the sales figures for the new Verizon iPhone were quite mediocre.

Here are the sales figures obtained from 5 Apple Stores:

A customer survey completed by new Verizon iPhone 4 purchasers also shows that Verizon isn't really snagging as many AT&T customers as originally thought.

It definitely looks like the March 1st Apple Event will be that announcement date for the new line of MacBook Pros. I really like the dark gunmetal that is shown in the Intel advertisement...hopefully these have been darkened up a little bit!

PwnageTool 4.2 Fixes iBooks Jailbreak Issues

According to the iPhone Dev Blog, the Chronic Dev Team untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 has been incorporated into jailbreak tool, PwnageTool 4.2. PwnageTool supports iPhone3G, iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-Verizon, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, iPad, and AppleTV 2G.

PwnageTool also includes two very recent improvements to the 4.2.1 JB: iBooks was just fixed by @comex and @pushfix last night so that it works as intended on DRMed books, and the wifi problem on AppleTV 2G was fixed by @nitotv, @DHowett, and @saurik. Both of these fixes will also be available in upcoming Cydia package updates, so if you’re already jailbroken you can wait for those updates rather than restore and jailbreak again.
