Motorola Superbowl Ad, 1984 Mockery

This is a teaser from Motorola for a likely Superbowl ad that may be coming this weekend. Green Bay...Pittsburgh, NAH! iPad or Xoom...that is the real battle that will begin this Sunday.

"2011 looks a lot like 1984. One authority. One design. One way to work. It's time for more choices. It's time to explore. It's time to live a free life."

Ikea versus Apple Comparison, Why...I Not Know!

I don't understand the reason for comparing these two, entirely unrelated companies. It's like comparing apples and lingonberries or Apples and Swedish meatballs.

Apple Worldwide Smart Phone Market

From the 4th quarter of 2009 to the 4th quarter 2010, Apple's iPhone has seen 80%+ growth and are falling behind. Google has seen a 6 fold increase in smart phone shipments as compared to last year when the first "DROID" smart phones were released. The original Motorola Droid was released in November 2009, Google has since released a couple new models each week since then to take over Nokia in shipments.

Google has been hiring Android developers like mad in an attempt to improve the Android Market and its selection of apps. It appears that Android is also poised to grab a nice slice of the tablet market from the iPad in the coming months and the more than 40 Android tablets expected in 2011. The main hold-up for these tablets is the creation of a "tablet-friendly" version of Android (Honeycomb) OS and Google is expected to officially announce Android 3.0 later this week.

Apple currently offers only the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS to compete with the multiple Nokia and Google smart phone handsets...and are getting the last laugh!

Apple currently has around 4.2% of the "entire cell phone market", not only smartphones, and is capable in pulling over half of cell phone profit. The chart below shows the 8 major mobile phone vendors and shows their relative profit shares: HTC, Apple, RIM, LG, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia.

Floating Macbook Air

Apple Stores have is bringing the "Air" into the new Macbook Air's through their store window. I remember watchin mythbuster when they tried to lift one of the team members with balloons...in response to the infamous "balloon boy" saga a few years back.

Maybe they outta fill the balloon with hydrogen and remove the metal wire holding the display up...fire hazard? Nah...

iPad VoiceControl, Via Jailbreak And VoiceActivator

Chpwn developed VoiceActivator, this is essentially a tweak which incorporates new voice commands for iOS devices. This would extend to other Apple devices (iPhone 4, iPod Touch and the iPad) and make launching apps or other repetitive iOS tasks very smooth. Apple has attained a patent for voice control on the iPad (jailbroken), but now you won't have to wait until the iPad 2.

VoiceActivator has its own settings panel allowing you to be able to edit voice commands much like you edit keyboard shortcuts. For instance, let’s say that you want to open our site’s website on your iPad; assign “iPJB” or “iPadJailbreak” as a command in VoiceActivator, then just say the command into Voice Control, and our webpage will open in Safari.

Custom Voice Control commands! VoiceActivator is a new tweak by chpwn (http://chpwn.com/) to let you take full control of the Voice Control feature of your iPhone or iPod touch. Launch apps, open URLs, use Activator actions: it's all here, in one tweak.

(Yeah, YouTube did something weird to my voice. I don't usually sound *that* weird.)

If you missed Macworld 2011, John Gruber (Daring Fireball), Jason Snell (Macworld), Dan Moren (Macworld), and Adam Engst (Tidbits) give a nice narrative about the future of the Mac.

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 greenpois0n RC5 Jailbreak Supports iPad

It appears that iOS 4.2.1 will have an untethered (via greenpois0n) jailbreak released before iOS 4.3 is launched...mainly due to greenpois0n RC5 not being compatible with iOS 4.3.

It appears that Apple may have closed the exploit (loophole) that is currently being utilized in iOS 4.2.1 tethered jailbreaking. It is expected that greenpois0n jailbreak will work on iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch. Hopefully I'll get to bring this announcement to you SOON!

Preview: Angry Birds RIO

There is an upcoming animated film Rio, which tells a story of about two birds, Blu and Jewel, that fight animal smugglers in Rio de Janeiro. In March, Angry Birds RIO, will launch with 45 initial levels...no word on pricing but $5 is the expectation.

The new Angry Birds game is expected to follow a plot much like the movie. Angry Birds kidnapped, taken to Rio de Janeiro, manage to escape, then head out to save the movie characters Blu and Jewel.

From the creators of Ice Age...RIO Trailer Below.

Via Moviefone

'Rio' is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the 'Ice Age' films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there's another -- and that she's a she -- he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it's far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life's many wonders. 'Rio' brings together a menagerie of vivid characters, a heart-warming story, colorful backdrops, energizing Latin and contemporary music, and family-friendly song and dance.

Rustic iPad Case, Kickstarter

I regularly check out Kickstarter projects to see new (sometimes unnecessary) tech products that need some backing. Typically, there is a nice incentive to show you support in that you'll gain exclusive early right to a product, qualify for a discount, or essentially "pre-purchase" a product with you donation...backing.

Made with superb quality and craftsmanship this handmade sleeve is a classy and elegant way to protect and carry your iPad. With a large single pocket to hold your iPad, it is a perfect companion for a weekend business trip or a great getaway. The outside of the sleeve is 80% wool/ 20% polyester blend with natural leather accents. All the materials needed to craft this sleeve are proudly purchased in New England.

Check out this Kickstarter project

A $40 or $50 pledge will get backers a Kindle 3 or iPad case respectively...kick in $20 and you'll get a $5 discount code on a future purchase. For custom embroidery, you can throw in $100. What are your thoughts...worth kicking in to the idea?

CEO Gives All Employees An iPad

KLA-Tencor which makes semiconductors has decided to give every employee an iPad...lets do the math:

5400 iPads X $500 - Apple bulk discount = $2.5 million + CIO/IT integration headaches = priceless

KLA-Tencor currently does not officially support the iPad as an enterprise device. As reported in Apples 4th quarter 2010 sales call earlier this month, over 80 percent of the Fortune 100 are deploying or piloting iPads, up from 65 percent in the September quarter.

The happy CEO surprised the company's 5,400 employees by telling them that they would each be rewarded with a shiny, new iPad.

"The whole euphoria of an iPad started, and we had to get into high gear," says CIO Ashwin Ballal, charged with the massive iPad rollout. "That's when my nightmare began."

While not officially supported as an enterprise device, the iPad would be allowed to tap into KLA-Tencor's network for e-mail, calendaring, contacts, Web apps and other purposes.

According to this chart below of a survey provided to over 1,500 developers regarding "what do Android Tablets need to beat the iPad?"

Netflix Hours Viewed On Apple TV, iPad

In their earnings release, Netflix revealed that the number of hours spent viewing Netfix on Apple TV has passed the number of hours on the iPad. This seems a little backward as Apple has sold 15 million iPads...compare this to just over 1 million new Apple TVs.

This is probably due to the fact that over half of Apple TV owners have a Netflix streaming account...as compared to only 10% of iPad owners downloading the Netflix app.

Netflix press release:

The devices with large installed bases – meaning Windows and Mac laptops, Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo Wii – are the most popular devices for watching instantly from Netflix. AppleTV has done very well for us, and in just four months has passed the also-growing iPad in Netflix viewing hours. The Roku player remains a strong performer. Our iPhone and Windows phone applications are very popular, and we’ll have support for several Android phones this year. While Google TV has not yet gone mainstream, the concept of Android and Chrome built into televisions and Blu-ray players is powerful; we’re confident that they will be very successful, and we are investing in our Google TV application. Blu-ray players and TVs with Internet connectivity are the big growth categories for us, as more and more providers are building in Wi-Fi across their product lines.

I enjoy watching Netflix on my Apple TV, I have watched a few movies through iTunes rentals...but this has had varied success.

Apple Now #3 PC Maker

Apple is now the #3 PC (ironic?) maker, based on 4th Quarter 2010 shipments. Growth year-over-year is well over 200%, projected iPad sales will likely drive this number higher as long as iPad sales doesn't cut into Mac sales.

Worldwide the PC industry grew 19 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2010 with over 105 million devices shipped according to market researcher Canalys. Some say that tablets should not be in this category...but you would have to excluded netbooks as well which would result is some (Acer) to drop off this list.

1 Year Ago: The Name iPad Shocked Us

It took only a year to make the term "iPad" one of the most common words used. Even though the iPad name was poked fun at...it was a year ago today that the "unknown Apple tablet" was announced. Now that the "year of the iPad" is finally over, now the "year of the tablet" can finally begin. After an initial prediction of 3.3 million iPads to be sold in 2010...I highly doubt that 2011 tablet sales are off again.

Check out this iPad infographic OnSwipe

3D Springboard Coming To Cydia

Why jailbreak your iPhone...one reason is to make your friends jealous with your jailbroken iPhone "capabilities". Check out the video below for 3D effects...

Here is a demo of a tweak I've been working on. It gives a glasses free 3d "effect". Will be out soon in cydia for jailbroken iDevices running 4.0+

This tweak will run $4 and be available in the Cydia store soon, it would probably do well in the Cydia Theme Center.

iPad App, Deep Space

Dead Space by Electronic Arts has made the move to the Apple App Store for all iOS devices after a good run on a PC and Console. Previous platforms for this game have won several awards and now Apple has picked this app as their "Game of the Week".

Macworld 2011 Starts Today

Apple stated towards the end of 2008 that they were pulling out of Macworld due to increased traffic at its retail stores worldwide, making it "unnecessary" to do trade shows. There still is a lot of tradition in the Macworld Expo which was first held in Jan 1985, I wonder if Marty McFly drove his DeLorean there?

Some keynote speakers at the 2011 Macworld are comedian Sinbad, Zoe Keating (techy musician) and iFixit's Kyle Wiens. Vendor exhibits dropped from 400 in 2009 (Apple's last attendance) to 250 in Macworld 2010...hopefully there will be a nice turnout this year!

Seems like a nice time for the Macworld Daily Reader iPad App to be released...

Iconic Apple iPad Ad

One of Apple's biggest advantages in the tablet and smartphone market is their App Store, and flexing that tech muscle through their advertisements is a decision built for success. By Apple showcasing their apps on commercials, it gives developers even more incentive to develop the "next big thing" to make it on an Apple commercial and gain "free" advertising.

This latest ad for the iPad called "Iconic" features a DJing app, airline ticket app, WSJ app, iBooks, iWork, a Hollywood app and Vanity Fair. Apple ought to focus on more innovative apps by small startups like Flipboard instead of showcasing apps from large established developers.

Verizon iPhone 4 Hotspot, Not Unlimited.

Well, if you got excited about the Verizon iPhone unlimited data plan (for a limited time) here is a little caveat. It appears that the hotspot feature will come with a separate 2GB limited monthly data pool. This covers all of the devices using your iPhone’s 3G data connection via the Hotspot feature upcoming in iOS 4.3. If you exceed that amount, each additional gigabyte will cost you another $20!

It looks like an iPhone jailbreak will be necessary to sidestep this $20 fee from Verizon. An unlimited data plan with a jailbroken iPhone on the Verizon network seems like a nice set-up to me. Activating your wireless hotspot feature on a Verizon iPhone allows you to use the device as a portable WiFi router for up to five devices..but isn't free or unlimited.

There is definitely a market as Verizon stated today in their Q4 earnings report that only 26% of its 83 million subscribers currently have smartphone devices. This means that 62 million Verizon customers do not currently have a smartphone and will likely upgrade to one once they are eligible to re-up their contract.

Verizon iPhone 4 Unlimited Data, Limited Time

How do you get AT&T subscribers with a grandfathered unlimited data plan to switch to the Verizon network? Verizon has decided to offer an unlimited data plan for iPhone 4 customers on their network.

The Wall Street Journal reports

“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot,” Lowell McAdam stated. "Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T"

The country’s No. 2 carrier still has millions of subscribers grandfathered into unlimited plans they signed up for before AT&T switched to tiered pricing last summer.

Lowell McAdam is the incoming Verizon CEO...

He also stated later today that this iPhone unlimited plan will be a temporary offer and you should act sooner than later.

StreamToMe iOS 4.3 AirPlay App

It appears that Apple has already started to approve apps that take advantage of feature in iOS 4.3. StreamToMe has been updated a couple hours ago with support for AirPlay video streaming capability...that which is not available in iOs 4.2.1. For those of us that have a developer account and have already installed iOS 4.3 Beta, you may have some luck in testing it...but need to ensure that your Apple TV is also running the Beta software.

iOS 4.3 is getting close, with Beta 2 being released just last week and Beta 3 likely coming in the next couple days. iOS 4.3 GoldMaster will probably be seeded sometime next week based off the past iOS beta history. Apple typically waits until it releases the necessary firmware before approving apps...maybe it will be here sooner rather than later.

Hopefully we won't have to use an iOS 4.3 PwnageTool to gain full capability of the upcoming firmware upgrade. It would be really nice if gestures were enabled on my iPad!

iPad 2 With Near-Field Communication

According to Bloomberg, Apple is planning to introduce services allowing iPad and iPhone owners to make purchases by waving their iDevice in front of a scanner. This Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology is and embedded chip allowing Apple's service to tap user information already on file, including credit card information.

I've been waiting for 10 years to be able to use my phones as a wallet. There are some workarounds using barcodes like Starbucks or dongles, with an NFC embedded... the payment would just happen wirelessly and automatically once approved. NFC hasn't worked up until now mainly due to lack of consumer adaptation, once this happens then merchants will start accepting it.

Apple has hired many NFC experts in recent history, and it holds patents surrounding this technology. Hopefully it will arrive in the iPad 2 and iPhone 5!

Android Tablets Galore

Xoom Droid has just the 46 upcoming Android tablets which are expected in 2011. I guess the iPad asked for some competition, and here it is...

With the abundance of different Android tablets, most running Honeycomb, it will be difficult to determine the biggest threat to the iPad (or iPad 2). I guess if you shoot with a machine gun at an iPad from 100 yards, one of the bullets is bound to target the iPad.

White iPhone 4 Surfaces Again

BGR appears to have found evidence to further show the upcoming arrival of the White iPhone 4 that has longer rumored. After Verizon mistakely added a white iPhone 4 photo to their gallery, now the Online Account Management system at AT&T is showing a 16GB and 32GB white iPhone 4 model.

It is definitely getting close, possibly last February for the white beast's official release.

Xoom Droid Price, Release Date

It appears that based on some leaked interal images at Best Buy, the price of the Motorola Xoom Droid running Android Honeycomb 3.0 is $700. Another screen image shows that the release date is still set for February 17th.

This price is about what could be expected for a tablet computer with all off the bells and whistles that are incldued with the Xoom Droid. If you directly compare this tablet with the 32GB iPad, which runs $729, the Xoom Droid is the clear choice. The current (1 year old) iPad doesn't include a dual-core processor or have cameras...these shortfalls will likely be eliminated with the iPad 2 which appears to be with months of release.

Here is an unfair comparison of the Motorola Xoom to the original iPad 32GB 3G, and a more fair comparison of the Xoom Droid to the rumored iPad 2.

App Store Downloads Top 10 Billion

There are not even 10 billion humans on the planet earth, or other planets that we know of. But Apple has managed to sell 10 billion apps, nearly 7 billion in the past year through their App Store. Apple announced that they were giving away a $10,000 App Store gift card to the person that bought the 10 billionth download. Apple said the winner of the gift card was Gail Davis of Orpington, England.

Gail hung up on the initial attempt from Apple to notify her as the $10,000 winner, but responded to a second notification attempt much more receptively. Gail downloaded the 10 billionth app from Apple's App Store, Paper Glider to was the lucky app winner.

I would suspect that App Store downloads would top 20 billion before the end of 2011, especially if you include Mac App Store sales to the iOS App Store.

Synchronized iPhone 4 Commercial

With the recent announcement of the CDMA iPhone 4 for Verizon's network, Apple has decided to show that "two (networks) are better than one". I would suspect that AT&T is not too fond of this commercial with all of the "delayed" text message commercials that they have been showing lately...

Here is the Verizon iPhone 4 commercial from last week

Cydia Theme Center

Jay Freeman (saurik) has been busy making Cydia faster in an apparent attempt to make the Cydia store more competitive with the Apple App Store. saurik added the "manage account" feature to Cydia early last week, and the Cydia Store now has implemented a theme center which will allow users to browse featured themes for retina and non-retina devices.

The Cydia theme center is expected to allow users to vote and rate device themes, essentially making them float to the top of the Cydia store index. Currently, only the top selling themes and those being selected by the staff of MacCiti or ModMyi are being featured.

Hopefully after iOS 4.3 is launched by Apple, more iPad Cydia Apps will be released to wet the appetites of us iPad jailbreakers!

Untethered iOS 4.3 Jailbreak For iPad, greenpois0n

Today the Chronic Dev Team added a video teaser showing off their untethered jailbreak for the iPhone. pod2g mentioned that something was coming. According to the tweet, onaj, p0sixninja and pod2g worked on this untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak tool. Not too long ago the iPhone Dev Team released the redsn0w 0.9.7 for untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak which result in many bugs being reported. Although the iPhone Dev Team has introduced many betas of redsn0w 0.9.7 it was essentially a backup plan and the better untethered iOS 4.2.1.

There have also been plenty of rumors that the untethered release will be held off until iOS 4.3 is implemented. Hopefully the iPad and iPhone jailbreak will arrive immediately after some initial testing and tweaks with iOS 4.3.

Enhanced: Apple iPhone 4 Case

A YouTube video uploaded yesterday shows that Apple has released a new bumper case design to add compatiblity with both the current iPhone 4 and the upcoming Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 set to release in 3 weeks. The primary difference between the two models is the location of the mute switch being moved slightly likely due to an adjustment in the CDMA perimeter antenna. Apple simply widened the cutout on their bumper case to accommodate both switch positions.

Facetime For iPad

Yesterday, rumors were floating around about a tiny iPad 2 screenshot floating around...mainly concerned with the low resolution icons that were displayed.

After Macrumors performed a detailed review of iOS 4.3 beta, they found evidence pretty much confirming iPad 2 cameras. This is not only a camera addition to the next iPad but also the inclusion of a Camera app, FaceTime and Photo Booth apps.

Macrumors also found filters for Photo Booth which include effects for photos including Thermal Camera, Mirror, X-Ray, Kaleidoscope, Light Tunnel, Squeeze, Twirl and Stretch.
