Apple May Remove Home Screen Button From iPad, iPhone

An Apple source hinted today that the iOS 4.3 multitouch gestures for the iPad will likely lead to the permanent removal of the home button. Instead of button taps to enable the multitasking bar or to bring you back to the home screen, a 4 or 5 finger gesture will replace it. I don't know if my kids could handle the removal of this handy button, but these new gestures may make the iPad a lot smoother.

Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones without the home buttons at the Apple campus, this new change may happen for the iPad 2 and iPhone 5. Originally, Steve Jobs tried to eliminate all physical buttons from the iPhone, and iPad iOS 4.3 gestures may be the first step in that direction.

"[We] are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher."
