redsn0w 0.9.7 updated

The guys over at the Dev Team have again updated redsn0w to a 4th beta. This version no longer requires an install of a separate program for the usbmux. Also, an issue with the race condition of the GUI...causing redsn0w to crash. It also appears that if beta4 testing goes smoothly... they will move on to opening it up to Windows testers and additional devices.

Official update log
Starting with this version, redsn0w no longer requires you to install and run a separate program for the usbmux (this was a non-trivial procedure for many). It’s okay to keep that program running if you normally use it for ssh anyway. We also think we’ve fixed a race condition in the GUI that was causing redsn0w to crash during the “Preparing JB Monte Files” step. Nothing at all has changed on the iPhone side (where the main issues are still just Bluetooth and Skype).
WARNING: This is still in beta and is meant for testers ONLY please!

December iPad Sales Slow, Intentionally

Well it is tough to saw that the iPad killed the Kindle in 2010, especially since the Kindle has passed the iPad in shipments for December. Apple produced 1.6 million iPads in December, this is a big drop from the 2.1 million units created last month. This drop has allowed Amazon’s Kindle to catch up and match iPad shipments...making the Kindle more than just a niche device, and more mass market.

There could be a very good explanation for this...

Rumors have been circulating that Apple is prepping to increase production for their iPad 2 to eliminate the shortages experienced with the original iPad. How quickly we forget that the iPad shipment was finally just changed to "ships in 24 hours" in late August.

The iPad 2 has been rumored to have three versions, with the addition of a CDMA 3G option for Verizon along with the currently offered Wi-Fi and 3G (ATT). Apple is expected to produce 4-5 million of the new iPad 2 for every month in 2011. I'm sure that they would prefer to have the iPad 2 "shipping in 24 hours" on the same day that they announce it!

iSpot 4G iPad

Sprint has recently cut the price of their iSpot 4G MiFi for your iPad by 80%, they will continue to sell them until they get rid of them all. So if you want to make your iPad into a 4G, you better hurry...

One HUGE drawback of the Sprint iSpot is that it only works where there is 4G...and very few spots have been upgraded to have 4G. The new device that will be released in coming weeks will have this feature...one that I am surprised they overlooked! I believe Best Buy was offering bundles for an iPad with a Sprint MiFi and a contract, hopefully people will get a discounted new 4G/3G MiFi!

RIM PlayBook Battery Fine, Still Delayed?

RIM has released a statement regarding the weak battery issues previously reported for the unreleased BlackBerry PlayBook. Blackberry insisted that the development of the PlayBook battery was on schedule and that the device life would be comparable to an iPad or Galaxy Tab....probably more like the Samsung in the 6 hour life than the 10 hour iPad battery.
"Any testing or observation of battery life to date by anyone outside of RIM would have been performed using pre-beta units that were built without power management implemented,"
It is or it isn't...but what is true is that the BlackBerry PlayBook will still not be available for 5 months, which is a long time coming for the few remaining BlackBerry fans!

Apple TV Movie Rental

Well...I guess my wife and I will have to think ahead next time.

I knew there would be some buffering for an iTunes movie rental, but sheessh!

My wife chose the movie tonight after the little ones went to bed...I guess I'll watch Tennessee lose to UNC in OT.  Tennessee really threw that bowl game away...no wonder they are 6-7

iPad Cookie

Well, no...not yet.

It would probably be more like an iPad cake...

But there have been some highly popular iPhone cookies floating lately. The creator of this fine looking cookie requests that you admire before indulging.

You better head into the Green Gables bakery in Japan before Apple shuts them down like they shut down the kid making a killing on the White iPhone conversion kit!

I wish the bakery down on the corner here would start making these...we would have to keep it quiet so they don't get shutdown. Maybe that can pay the Apple accessory tax?

rubyra1n jailbreak site

It appears someone has created a website called rubyra1njailbreak.com, and even a few are claiming that it was created by GeoHot himself. From the whois records, it does appear that GeoHot does own the rubyra1n.com domain...but someone else is planning to profit on the "rubyra1njailbreak".com version and is claiming that it is George Hotz.

This is pretty similar to the popularity of SpiritJB.com being duplicated by SpiritJB.org...which is unrelated to the Spirit dev team hackers.

There is no sense in following this site's facebook page or twitter...since it has nothing to do with GeoHot and his upcoming rubyra1n jailbreak.

WhoIS registar records:

It really doesn't make sense that GeoHot would register another rubyra1n related sites the same day as it was leaked that GeoHot registered rubyra1n.com 9 months ago...

iPad 2 USB Port

Every day it seems like there's a new rumor about a new model, a new launch date or even a USB port. The most recent rumor comes courtesy of the Mobile Review blog editor Eldar Murtazin, who says the iPad 2 will include a USB port. Now you will be able to use these embedded USB jump drives with your iPad 2.

The tweet reads:
"Talked with colleague which working with some ODM vendors connected with Apple. He is research guy. According to his sources iPad2 will have usb port."

A USB will likely knock all of the camera connection kits with USB 3-in-1 5-in-1 adapters down a notch.

Verizon iPhone Announcement

Apple is expected to announce a CDMA version of their popular iPhone for Verizon in early 2011. It has been reported that the announcement will likely not take place at CES 2011, but instead shortly afterward closer to mid-February.
“Apple’s introduction of an iPhone for use on Verizon’s network will come sometime after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, according to a person familiar with Apple’s plans who is not authorized to discuss them publicly.”
Since Apple prefers to have their own special events, I expect a January 25th Apple Event to happen...with both the announcement of the new iPhone for Verizon (White one please!) and the announcement of the iPad 2. I am hopeful that this announcement will be like most of Apple's announcements in that the iPad 2 and iPhone for Verizon will be available for order immediately after the event like the MacBook Air.

The months of waiting for my 3G iPad after its announcement is not how Apple prefers to announce their products.

iPhone Air

Instead of the iPhone 5, how about if Apple launches the iPhone Play and the iPhone Air. With the recent popularity of the MacBook Air (took two tries to get it right), an iPhone Air seems like a good plan. What Apple needs is an entry-level "free phone with contract" to really put the stranglehold on Android and their diverse line of cell phones.

Apple has been trying to unload the iPhone 3GS at a discounted price, but who wants last years model. Offering up an expanded line of iPhones seems like a great idea, especially if you keep the look and style fresh. This definitely won't happen at CES 2011 in a couple weeks, but how about in June? Thoughts?

rubyra1n jailbreak

Rubyra1n.com was registered by George Hotz (aka GeoHot), the iPhone hacker behind blackra1n and limera1n, back in March 2010. As RedmondPie has noted, the WHOIS domain credentials for rubyra1n.com appears to be registered by George Hotz and are the same as blackra1n.com, GeoHot's jailbreak tool released last year.  The rubyra1n site registry information is slightly different than that of the limera1n.com information that was released in October for a jailbreak to iOS 4.1.

There is nothing more than speculation that GeoHot may be planning to use rubyra1n.com as the domain for his next jailbreak tool.

iPod Nano Jailbreak, Close

After James Whelton's blog post of his discovery of a hack to bypass of the iPod Nano cache comparison to install blank spaces on his iPod Nano and essentially remove apps from the springboard...now another hacker has got the Nano iPod in DFU mode.

Steven Troughton-Smith has figured out how to return the iPod Nano to its default factory settings and add custom firmware files to the iPod Nano.

"Discovered what may be DFU mode by holding down the restart buttons until you get a black screen and iTunes sees the device. disk.fw and osos.fw work (one boots disk mode, the other boots to a homescreen). The other files make the nano boot to a white screen, but go no further."

For those that have a jailbroken iPhone or iPad know that this is the same method for installing customized firmware to these Apple devices. Steven has managed to send two encrypted files to his iPod Nano and have them executed on a reboot. He basically used a modded version of the iRecovery and extract2g jailbreak tools to get the files from the iPod Nano's operating system. He has broken ground for other developers to start messing with the Nano 6G.

Do you want Angry Birds on your iPod Nano? Me too...

Playbook Launch Delayed To May 2011

We have reported on this mythical BlackBerry PlayBook for many months now, with an original expectation of the RIM PlayBook being delivered in early 2011. All we really have a confirmation is that the PlayBook is expected to cost less than $500.

According to Kaufman Bros analyst, Shaw Wu, the Blackberry PlayBook is experiencing relatively short battery life. Shaw has had sources tell him that the PlayBook currently lasts only a few (3-4 hours) per charge. Now my iPad is 8 months old and has probably been through 50 discharge cycles and still gets 8 hours a charge.

Apple boasts a 10 hour battery life for the iPad, many were skeptical until they got their hands on one for a performance test. The Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 6 hour battery life, so if the PlayBook is really experiencing these short battery lifes...it may stall even before it gets out of the gate.

Shaw Wu writes...
"Keep in mind that QNX (OS for PlayBook) wasn't originally designed for mobile environments but rather for devices like network equipment and automobiles where battery life isn't as much a constraint."
Wu has been conservative with his estimate of 700k unit sales in 2011, many other analysts have predicted up to 8 million PlayBooks flying off the shelves next year.

Could it possibly be due to Flash...Nah

CDMA iPad 2 For Verizon

According to Digitimes, it appears that Apple is preparing to launch 3 different versions of the next-gen iPad (iPad 2) in 2011 with a WiFi/UMTS chip lineup as previously, with a new CDMA version. Is there room for the larger CDMA system and a dual core inside that sleek iPad exterior?

The sources pointed out that about 60-65% of current iPad shipments are 3G models, indicating that consumers prefer models that are able to connect to the Internet all the time, therefore Apple is aiming to work even more closely with telecom carriers by offering more wireless solutions for iPad 2 to satisfy market demand.

It appears from the report that Apple is also working on new screen technology to similar to the Amazon’s Kindle. Apple will likely include a new anti-smudge/glare screen with the iPad 2 to help read-ability and reduce smudges and glare from the iPad 2's glass surface.

It has been long rumored that Verizon was interested in launching a CDMA version of the next iPad in 2011. A few months back, Verizon started selling iPads bundled with their CDMA MiFi system and are rumored to have a CDMA iPhone in early 2011.

It sure would be nice to have a Verizon iPad without having to carry around that stupid MiFi everywhere with you and your iPad!

He Should Have Been More Specific

This guy got his "eye-pad" he wanted for xmas...

Probably should have been more specific, gonna have to get her a MacBook Air, with extra AIR!!

Bright Side...that "eye pad" could actually be useful for medical purposes...

An iPad is just a iPhone that doesn't make calls and is too big to fit in your pocket.

Samsung Galaxy Player

Apple's iPod Touch is essentially a "phoneless" iPhone, and turned out to be good move by Apple a few years back. And with no competition in this device category and a full line of Apps, Apple has been able to cash in uncontested...until now.

Samsung’s Galaxy Player is essentially a non-phone version of its highly popular Galaxy S phone. Many will say...okay maybe not, but I will say that it is just a miniature version of the Galaxy Tab. Much like the iPad was a larger version of the iPod Touch...and did you see how that iPad idea turned out.

The Galaxy Player screen is expected to be 4 inches, slightly larger than the iPod Touch with a lower resolution of 800 x 480 (960 x 640 “Retina” display for the Touch). The Galaxy Player is a lot thicker than the Touch at 9.9 mm as compared to the 7.2 mm,,,now if Samsung can only manage to offer a better camera and longer lasting, removable battery.

More rumors will like surface as we get closer to CES 2011 (Jan 6-9th, 2011)

8GB, 16GB, and a 32GB level of the Galaxy Player will likely be made available...likely to run on Android 2.2 "Froyo.

iPad Touch

At the beginning of this year, January 19th, 2010...many dismissed the iPad an merely a large version of the iPod Touch...and thought this product was destined to flop. Well, after selling nearly 10 million iPad's in the past 9 months...Apple proved the critics wrong.

It appears that the looks of the 2nd generation iPad will now look more similar to an iPod Touch. Macotakara analyzed the leaked iPad 2 cases that made waves the past couple weeks and concluded that they were designed for a iPad with a back that is flattened with tapered sides. The current iPad has a curved back with flat sides...basically the opposite. You probably don't want the iPad 2 to have TOO flat of a back...it could be difficult to pick up from a counter or other flat surface.

redsn0w 0.9.7 update

The Redsn0w 0.9.7 jailbreak tool now has a Beta 3 version available. The iPhone Dev Team has been fixing bugs related to non-GUI programs handling media content like the embedded iTunes videos.

Dev-Team Blog update #3
The third beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs too (like the daemons that handle media content). That should cover things like Facetime, Winterboard themes, and embedded videos in iTunes. If you had trouble using the usbmuxd in previous betas, please wait until we incorporate that into redsn0w itself (i.e. don’t bother trying this beta3, just wait for the integration).

iPod Nano Hack

PixieOwls did a basic hack of the new iPod Nano, in the video below it shows removing an icon from its springboard and placing a blank space. James Whelton, hackerextrodinaire, has managed to bypass the iPod Nano's cache comparison to install a simple Springboard hack which allows for blank space creation...this has been demonstrated on jailbroken iPads and iPhones.

James would like to clarify...
the iPod Nano hasn’t been “jailbroken” as some sites claim, I do not have root access over the device. I did not “install” an app. I figured out how to remove them and insert a blank space into the springboard.

CDMA Verizon iPhone Being Shipped?

Digitimes has reported that Apple will likely ship around 20 million iPhones in the 1st quarter of 2011, up from a 19 million global goal. CDMA (Verizon) iPhones are included in this estimate, with 5 million units expected for the same period. I've been stuck with Verizon for the past couple years and would jump at the chance to get an iPhone 4 on Verizon's network.

The first-quarter shipment goal for WCDMA iPhones has been adjusted from 13 million units to 14-15 million units, the sources said. The shipment goal for CDMA iPhones, which will be launched in North America and Asia Pacific in the first quarter, is set at 5-6 million units, the sources added.

How To: Untethered iPad Jailbreak

Well after trying the redmondpie jailbreak instructions to jailbreak your iPad, we've decided to wipe out our "test" iPad again and follow the very similar...but more detailed instructions over at SpiritJB.org

I have run into the same issues with this second set of instructions...hopefully they will get these bugs worked out before the new year rings in!

Keep in mind, that the iPhone Dev-Team hasn't officially released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 yet as this is still in beta testing. If you can't wait, then these methods that we have tried here at iPadJailbreak.com are the best available. Maybe you should break in the new iPad you got for xmas a little before trying these beta version jailbreak! :)

Untethered iPad Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, redsn0w 0.9.7

The guys over at the iPhone Dev-Team have released their “backup plan” (Redsn0w 0.9.7) for untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak. The beta version of redsn0w will allow you to a untethered jailbreak of your iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1.

This beta version is having some success on the iPad...RedmondPie's How-To

But I tried this on my iPad 16GB 3G with limited success.

Initially, I tried the untethered jailbreak on my iPad that had a tethered jailbreak. This got stuck in a reboot loop. Next I wiped it clean and restored the to iOS 4.2.1. I did another untethered jailbreak and received these messages from usbmuxd:

----------------------------------------
Exception happened during processing of request from ('127.0.0.1', 50446)

raise MuxError("Connect failed: error %d"%ret)
MuxError: Connect failed: error 3
----------------------------------------

redsn0w indicated that it was done and gave control back to my iPad. It was once again stuck in a reboot loop at the Apple icon with the rotating segments in the middle superimposed. This time after I unplugged the USB lead from it, the reboot loop stopped and my iPad started up immediately.

Here are some issues that I've run into with my working untethered jailbroken iPad...
  • Double pressing the home button results in the unit rebooting instead of seeing the task manager. Orientation lock was off before the jailbreak.
  • Triple pressing the home button results in the unit rebooting as well.
  • Plugging my iPad into the USB for a sync or whatever while iTunes is running results in my iPad rebooting, it stays stuck in the reboot loop until the USB lead is unplugged.

Apple 2010 Summary Video

Well, since your are visiting this site...I'll assume that you purchased an Apple product or two in 2010. Most likely the iPad, and I managed to get my hands on a MacBook Air this year as well...but no iPhone 4 yet since I'm stuck with Verizon.

Here is a summary of 2010 for Apple in chronological order...

MuscleNerd iOS Jailbreak

As many of your know, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 being developed by comex won't be able to meet his self imposed Christmas deadline. The iPhone Dev-Team has announced that they are going to release their “backup plan” for untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak over the Christmas weekend according to MuscleNerd. Currently, the team is looking for beta testers to give the latest version of redsn0w a try.

If you'd like to help out the Dev Team, the requirements to test Redsn0w for an iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak are available on Redmondpie...otherwise just sit back and wait for the guinea pig geniuses give it a try to work out all the bugs. The Dev Team hasn't had a good week with the recent jailbreak delays and the leak of the SHAtter exploit being argued about.

iPad 2 With Dual-core

I really haven't noticed any shortcomings in performance of my iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, but some are suggesting the introduction of another core would assist in making your iOS device run more applications...as tasks would be spread across several cores.

"Apple is on track to refresh the iPad by March and iPhone by late summer. A key component upgrade across these platforms will be a dual-core processor featuring a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores" this is according to Ashok Kumar of Rodman and Renshaw yesterday.

I would expect this slide to look different at Apple's event to announce the iPad...

The iPad will certainly need to make an upgrade to a dual-core to compete with the upcoming Motorola tablet and BlackBerry PlayBook which both have dual-core installed.

I have managed to sneak into the top 2500 today with my 74k score on 1-24 of Angry Birds Seasons. How have you guys fared on this latest Angry Birds level?

I have managed to get 3 stars on all of the levels so far and am planning to wait for santa to fly by tonight and will probably break out the iPad early xmas morning!

Have you managed 3 stars on all 24 Angry Bird's Season levels?

Untethered iPad Jailbreak Delayed

A couple weeks ago, comex tweeted that a more efficient userland untethered jailbreak would be made available for iOS 4.2.1 before Christmas. But it appears, according to a @comex latest tweet...that it may be a couple days later.

MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev-Team has a confirmed an untethered jailbreak working on iOS 4.2.1 firmware, this is essentially a back-up plan for the comex extensible jailbreak. The method MuscleNerd was referring to uses iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs which Cydia was saving for iOS devices in November.

Hopefully comex won't have to worry about the p0sixninja and MuscleNerd bickering over the SHAtter exploit being leaked, maybe he can put an end to it...

So I guess the word is..."give us a couple days" for right now. I guess comex will definitely deliver 300+ days before next Christmas!

iPad 2 Dimensions

An Chinese source that would like to remain anonymous recently stated that the next iPad will be 3mm smaller than the current one. The height of the new iPad will be 239mm (from 242.mm) with the width being 186mm (from 189mm). This shrinkage will not be gained through a change in the screen size, but in a reduction of the bezel of the screen.

An artist rendering of the iPad speaker grille suggests a much bigger and presumably louder sound system.

This source has also made claims that the back of the iPad will be much more flat than it is now. I forgot how much the iPad wobbled on the table before I got my DODOCase, this being flatter would be a nice improvement.

Haven't heard much on the expected thickness of the iPad 2, but a 3 mm reduction is likely not possible with a current iPad thickness of 13.4mm. The Galaxy Tab is 12mm in thickness, but the PlayBook (where are these for xmas?) managed to get down to the 10mm thickness mark. With the expected additions to the iPad 2 in the coming months, making the iPad 2 10-15% thinner would be an accomplishments.

With these slight reductions in overall dimensions will definitely put a spark into the iPad Case market...I know that 3mm adjustment will make most cases unusable. My Muzetto Bag should still work fine with these slight adjustments though...

Steve Jobs, Person Of The Year

Our favorite CEO, Steve Jobs was named "Person Of The Year" by the Financial Times. The resurrection of Apple was "officially" completed with release of the iPad early this year. I guess the iPod, iPhone and the iTunes empire were all just baby steps to finacial supremecy.

I guess when your are Obama's #1 fan for wealth...it certainly helps!

“And something that’s always been the greatest strength of America is a thriving, booming middle class, where everybody has got a shot at the American dream. And that should be our goal. That should be what we’re focused on.”

“How are we creating opportunity for everybody? So that we celebrate wealth...We celebrate somebody like a Steve Jobs, who has created two or three different revolutionary products. We expect that person to be rich, and that’s a good thing. We want that incentive. That’s part of the free market.”
How could you not like a president that will sign your iPad!

Jailbreak Exploit, SHAtter Leaked

p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev team who worked on the SHAtter-based GreenPois0n tool has tweeted accusations that MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team publicly for leaking the exploit. MuscleNerd of course denies all of these claims...

This is turning into a teenage drama...but the main problem is that Apple is going to patch both limera1n and SHAtter for all the next-generation devices. This will likely mean that the iPad 2 will not have a "back pocket" exploit available once limera1n is plugged for the current iOS devices.

p0sixninja: @MuscleNerd no, the version leaked had one small change I did right before it was given to YOU and YOU only!!

p0sixninja: @MuscleNerd pod2g gave it to you in PM

p0sixninja: @MuscleNerd dude, you leaked it and tried to frame me to get pod2g to leave cdev, I’ve already heard it all

p0sixninja: SHAtter is burned, and now everyone knows why. Oh well, untether bootrom exploit is still on the way

MuscleNerd: @p0sixninja you never gave me a version

MuscleNerd: @p0sixninja please stop trying to bring up drama again. You always do this when you’re otherwise empty-handed.

MuscleNerd: @p0sixninja I believe one of the 15 people in that room leaked SHAtter because GP didn’t work on Mac at that point

MuscleNerd: @p0sixninja lol yes, that’s exactly why I would leak something that helps me more than anyone (unlock depends on jailbreak). Please think.

The SHAtter bootrom exploit which wasn't used at the last minute because of Geohot’s limera1n for the next-gen iOS devices, although the greenpois0n exploit was also proven to work on the Apple TV.

Angry Birds Seasons, Day 22

How has Angry Bird's Seasons been going for you? I've fallen behind a couple days and spent the better part of 30 minutes getting a 3 star on Day 21 and Day 22.

Got 83k on Day 22, this score jumped me from 10k in the overall rankings to 3k...

How did you do on Day 22 of Angry Birds Seasons?

What is your total...only 3 days left until the finale, oh...and Christmas!

iPad Cydia Apps

As we have discussed many times before, the reason's to jailbreak your iPad (and more reason's to jailbreak your iPad) need to be weighed before jailbreaking your iPad. As of this writing, there is not an untethered jailbreak available for iOS 4.2.1 on your iPad.

Things that I weigh are the ease or complicatedness of the jailbreak, and the gain of a jailbreak. The Cydia Jailbreak Apps available for the iPad are a major factor to be considered. Here are some of my favorite Cydia Apps on the iPad so far...

Folder Enhancer

It makes opening folders much faster in full screen above the dock and does not have a limit for the number of apps inside each folder. FolderEnhancer is available at $2.49 from the Cydia Store.

OverBoard

This is a nice tweak that allow you to navigate your Springboard pages with a clean overlayed interface. You can set this up for multitouch pinch to display pages and icons. Overboard displays the page thumbnail in three column. But you can also adjust the number of displayed column in the configuration screen. Overboard is available for $1.99 in the Cydia Store.

AirVideoEnabler

AirVideoEnabler can push out video from any iOS app (including Safari) to the Apple TV through AirPlay. An iPad with iOS 4.2.1 installed can download AirVideoEnabler from Cydia for free. Check out this video demonstation of it in action

There are definite other great reasons to jailbreak your iPad...what are yours?

Waiting To Buy An iPad

Brett Arends over at the WSJ has compiled a nice list of the 10 reasons he doesn't want an iPad for Christmas. If you have waited (or been saving) to buy an iPad for 10 months now, it is probably worth waiting another couple months for a few big announcements to be made. Here are a few of his reasons to wait to buy an iPad.

The iPad will be cheaper next year - this is what I've been telling friends and family gawking at my iPad. Prices are definitely going to drop in a couple months, if you are turning Hulk-green with envy...check out Apples discounted refurbished iPads to save a few bucks.

The iPad 2 will be greatly improved - the next generation iPad will certainly include Facetime integration, camera, a thinner exterior, 3-axis gyro and possibly landscape docking of the iPad.

The iPad is finally getting some competition - after a year talking about Android 3.0 Honeycomb, CrutchPad, Galaxy Tab, Blackberry PlayBook, and a host of other iPad competition. It appears that many of these will launch in the next couple months. This may result in a better tablet option for you or may drive the price of the iPad down a little to compete.

Check out the rest of Brett's top 10 reasons the iPad is a lousy xmas gift here.

UPDATE: Untethered iOS Jailbreak

Since Apple didn't block the exploit used in limera1n, the jailbreak for your iPad should still be on schedule...according to the iPhone Dev Team. The original word from the dev guys was that an untethered jailbreak would be available before Christmas. The main advantage of this untethered jailbreak will be that you won't have to keep reinstalling your iTunes’ or Cydia apps. The only thing you'll have to do is rerun redsn0w jailbreak and it will be done!

MuscleNerd: Thanks to comex, redsn0w can now handle much bigger files than ramdisk 25MB limit. Useful for "backup plan" 4.2 untether

MuscleNerd: @jkurtz87 it shouldn’t require a restore…just another redsn0w run. (That’s the goal!)

Expect the new version of Redsn0w for all iOS devices to be available on or about Christmas eve...an iPhone 4 unlock on newer basebands will likely follow in January.

Israel Gets iPad

There is still some places in the world that the iPad has yet to be rolled out...now you can take Israel off that list. The iPad was officially launched in Israel yesterday, after an 8 month delay. The WiFi enabled 16GB iPad is NIS 2250 ($625 US Dollars).. The 16-GB iPad with 3G will cost NIS 2850, which translates to nearly $800 in U.S. dollars.

The iPad will not be restricted to Partner's Orange network, and the micro-SIM card will be able to access other carriers' networks Cellcom Israel Ltd.

iPad Clamcase Cost

The Clamcase is a long rumored iPad case that transforms your iPad into a laptop. Clamcase LLC, has delayed the release of the Clamcase for months, giving time for other companies a couple month headstart on an iPad bluetooth keyboard case. This hard case includes a laptop-like keybard which connects to the iPad through Bluetooth. This case looks pretty sweet, we still have an outstanding request for a review sample for a giveaway.

The Clamcase runs $100 directly from the manufacturer's website through an odd "Online gift card"...but this is likely limited as the case will normal retail closer to 150 clams.
