Yesterday, Nielsen reported that Apple's U.S. market share has eclipsed that of RIM (BlackBerry) within the smartphone share.
Both BlackBerry and iPhone OS market share is around 28%, with Android and MS Windows Mobile rounding out the top 4. It is also worth noting that nearly 30% of all mobile subscribers in the U.S. use a phone with a full operating system. I didn't know you could still buy a feature phone... :)
As for the future...it appears the RIM BlackBerry will continue to lose share with only 13% interest of the OS in future potential buyers.
The chart below shows the distribution of mobile users "looking to upgrade to a smartphone in the next year"
As for the not sure category...I know people over 55 years that could care less what operating system they use, it has to be difficult when the vision starts to fade an a "retina display" is too detailed for the deterioriated vision.
Women planning to get a smartphone appear to be more likely to want an iPhone as their next device, in contrast...slightly more males preferring Android.
