USB Embedded Jump Drive

This one is very interesting...there are USB drives embedded in brickwalls, buildings and curbs. The idea behind this is to create an anonymous, offline file-sharing hub in public space.

You can plug your laptop in like this dude...although it looks like he is up to something! This project is called Dead Drops, by Aram Bartholl

‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. I am ‘injecting’ USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. You are invited to go to these places (so far 5 in NYC) to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is still in progress, to be continued here and in more cities. Full documentation, movie, map and ‘How to make your own dead drop’ manual coming soon!

Well my new Macbook Air has a USB port...will have to try this if I run across it. Seems kinda dirty to me though!

  1. i dont think im putting my brand new macbook up against a brick wall, just sayin.

  2. Cool Idea, but there is a potential for strange stuff...

  3. Because no one would install a virus on one of those...

  4. @jshulman10
The only thing your macbook should do with a brick wall is getting thrown at it, just like any other steve jobs product.

  5. Yeah, what about if someone uploaded a run on plugin virus?

this could be dangerous, because generally firewalls aren't geared towards detecting threats on a USB drive. Usually you know what you're plugging in.

  6. Most laptops ask you before they try to autorun.
a virus wouldn't hurt anything unless your computer specifically started a process from the drive.

  7. Don't do it man. These all have child porn and tracer viruses to alert the police and government agencies of your whereabouts.
Really this a great idea. The same guy also invented mystery holes in walls to insert your penis. Sometimes I despair of this world.
