Greenpois0n Exploits AppleTV

There were two things I was waiting for before I bought an AppleTV: Firstly, I'm waiting for iOS 4.2 with AirPlay to come to my iPad. Second, I like greenpois0n to jailbreak my AppleTV to allow access to the file system. Looks like I should go ahead and order it now that iOS hacker p0sixninja (Joshua Hill) has jailbroken the AppleTV.

With an unreleased version of greenpois0n, p0sixninja was able to exploit the operating system of an AppleTV.

Hopefully Steve Jobs will provide some insight at the "Back to the Mac" event as to the release day (in November) of iOS 4.2 for my iPad to allow jailbreakers to get it unlocked promptly. The SHAtter exploit hole hasn't been utilized yet and iOS 4.2 will likely not plug the hole. It will be interesting to find out what Apple’s plans are for the new Apple TV.

As you can see in the photograph above posted by Hill on Twitter, the AppleTV hack adds in a greenpois0n menu to your AppleTV. It shouldn't be long before he manages to install apps from Cydia and perhaps Apple approved apps meant for the iPad. VLC on the AppleTV anyone? Bueller?

This jailbreak isn’t publicly available yet so don’t get all excited just yet. But, buying that AppleTV just got a little easier with a jailbreak in the works!
