iPad App Review: Promini HD

This app was selected for it is on sale for $0.99 (regular price is $5) on the Apple iTunes App Store

This game is similar to Lumines, a Tetris style game released on the PSP about 4-5 years ago. You need to properly rotate and align blocks of colored cubes thrown at you in order to create groups of similarly colored cubes that eventually get destroyed by a ray of light that passes above them at regular intervals. You are able to craft complex figures in order to earn special bonuses, buy special power-ups to help you clear your screen faster and much more.

With some interesting gesture controls and fun powerups, I found this the perfect game to relax with after a hard day’s work. Now, before you head over to the app store to buy it, I do have a couple important notes on price and gameplay that you’ll want to consider first. Because, as with any good game, timing is everything.

For the record, today, August 2nd was launch day for Promini HD. With an introductory sale price and some glowing reviews, it’s rising in popularity by the hour. At the time of this writing, there are over 100 ratings in the app store with above 4.5 stars being average. Lately I’ve been observing a trend with overwhelmingly positive reviews for apps on launch day. My theory relies on a dual approach: apps that are introduced at a reduced price (or free), boosted by a flurry of downloads and positive ratings, have a snowball effect that temporarily lands them in the spotlight.

  • Fun, excellent timing in progression of difficulty
  • Bonuses, powerups, and a store to purchase extra powerups (the same setup as StarDaze HD)
  • OpenFeint integration – because we all want to see how we measure up! OpenFeint is a pretty decent gaming community that many iPad apps are using now. It has a minimal signup process and automatically logs you in from app to app. Connect with friends, app developers, chat, and compare scores.
  • Optional 3D mode! Not something I’ve seen offered in any other iPad app. I don’t have 3D glasses to try it out with, but it’s a cool idea.

Overall, I'd give it 4.5 stars for only $1, but when they hike the price up to $ is probably about a 3 star game.

Promini HD is available for $1 (for until the end of today) from the Apple iTunes App Store
