iPad App Review: Let's Golf HD

Let's Golf remains one of the best golf games on the iPhone and with very few changes outside of appearance, it remains a great play. The touch controls still work quite well and the familiar swing meter used to take your shots is approachable as ever. However, it is disappointing that Gameloft did not take the time to add to Let's Golf HD for its iPad debut, such as new courses or golfers.

Let's Golf HD may look a Nintendo golf game, but it's no silly minigolf game.

You have a complete collection of clubs, complex courses loaded with real-world hazards, and controls that give you great control over the ball. Tapping a small map of the course flings the camera into sky to allow for a drop zone for your ball, complete with a grid that shows the slope of the course.

A wind meter shows which way the breeze is blowing, which really does have an effect on your shot success. Once you have lined of your shot, you tap a swing button to bring up a meter. The meter fills, which indicates the power of the swing. After tapping, the meter moves down into the accuracy zone. You need to tap as close to the central green mark as possible to guarantee a clean swing. It's a very simple system that's been used by golf games for years.

Tiger Woods Golf may advance the ball with a more precision swipe swing control, but admittedly, it takes some getting used to and is not necessarily accessible to casual gamers.

Because your iPad golf options are so limited right now, Let’s Golf HD is your best bet. But expect that to change in the near future when newer games hit the fairway.

Available from the Apple Apps Store for $5
